Clinking sound in rear wheel

I have an 850 Mark III. My rear wheel has developed a kind of metallic ‘clinking’ sound that is coming from inside the rear wheel hub. Sounds like a small coin is being carried around inside and falling when it gets to the top. I had the wheel off last winter for a new tire, and it makes the same sound when rotated slowly on a static wheel balancer. It has been doing this for well over a year now with no ill effects, and off course you don’t hear it on the road because of all the engine and wind noise.

If you look at the rear wheel exploded view (group 23) of the replacement catalog there is a plate (06-4810) that is shown off in space but no clue as to where it really goes. Could this be the cause of my noise, and should I even worry about it? Anybody else have this problem?

....They all do that , Sir !

The plate simply stops the cush drive rubbers from pushing through into the hub. When new, the sleeve nut holds the cush spider and plate tight against the inner hub webs but as they rotate in relation to each other, the parts fret and loosen up.

I cured my annoying rattle by cutting a thin sheet of rubber (cut from an old LandRover inner tube in my case), using the plate as a template and inserting it between plate and hub. The sleeve nut still tightens completely but the resilience of the rubber seems to keep the plate in one place.

Its also possible the hub axle bearing spacer is flopping a bit,
also a non issue service wise.

Check the cush drive paddles for stability and true-ness while
in there.

When you take the wheel off next time just use a bit of RTV around that plate behind the rubbers. The noise will be gone. Jim
