Chroming services have disappeared here in the New York area and the other nearby places haven't gotten the best reviews. Can anyone recommend a mail-order Chroming service? Its pipes on another bike I'm thinking of getting done. They are solid but badly pitted.

Browns has always been good, for 30+ years I've dealt with them. But not sure on them doing pipes. Good luck with that.

Browns Plating is the best! Here's my front fender that I had plated with nickel. Spendy though....

+1 on Pauls.
can be found at Hershey and in Hemmings.
Did some '34 Caddy bits for a fussy accomplice recently. Let me say you get very little for US$1000.-
I suspect they could strip, then fill the pits in the pipes but you better be sitting down.
Gone are the day's of cheap chrome. Good chrome is expensive. Like knock your socks off expensive.
All the Best.

HIs page gives you general estimates. If you send your stuff in he gives quote.
You are correct. It is far from cheap. But remember, the dollar ain't worth much,
the environmental regs are tough because chrome isnt exactly vitamin C. It
just is how it is.

Hopefully not hijacking thread, but anyone got any recommendations for chroming services in Lancashire, Engalnd, or UK generally?

Nice website, I have never used these guys.

I have a local guy in Phoenix. Excellent work but flake-y as all hell. As in months later you finally get your parts really really nice, but really really late.

Have the pipes been used on the bike as chroming used pipes will end up cracking as chrome will weaken the old pipes, if the pipes have been made and not used and haven't had any chrome on them before will be fine, most good chrome shops will shy off doing old used pipes, I worked as a chromer after I left school, we had a few motorcycle exhaust shops send them there new pipes to be chromed as well when I got my headers made for my Norton they were chromed by the same place that I worked at many years before, I still have these headers on my Norton after 33 years use and are still good for their age, but once I made the mistake to chrome my dirt bike exhaust pipe (old used pipe) after a few weeks they started to crack around the welds.

I think the problem with old pipes is the carbon that is inside the pipe, maybe getting them sandblaster inside mite help before chroming but there would not be no garrenteed after, a lot of good chroming shops are closing because of the cost to buy the metals that are used in the proccess as well the chemicals that are used as well power cost to run the tanks.

I have recently used Reading Chrome Plating and Polishing to re chrome the fenders and chain guard for my 1967 Atlas. I showed Scott the parts and his first question was do I want "show chrome" or "street chrome"? I had no idea what he was talking about and he explained that the show chrome was kept in the copper plating tank longer and then polished much longer before the remaining plating. It was also three times the price! I saw examples of both and the street chrome is what you would see on a bike from the factory. The show chrome is simply better. I went with the street chrome due primarily a limited budget. The two fenders and chain guard ran me $350. The phone is 610-372-0270 and they have been in the business for decades. I had them do some work for me in 1983 on a 1946 Indian Chief which I was working on and they did a great job then as well. They do all types of plating. I didn't realize the plating can also come in different tinting from smoke to black chrome as well.

Thanks to all
Ashman, the pipes were chromed from the factory. This is my next potential/probable bike purchase and the pipes appear to be unobtainium (Silentium brand for a Benelli). They are badly pitted so I'm looking to refurbish. Is there any other option I wonder?

I think you will find that a good re-chrome job on those pipes will be very expensive, plus the guys don't like messing with the insides of old pipes, but maybe they can block it off, but then you run the risk of the inside rust. But if you have to... I'd talk to them very explicitly what you have before committing. Nearly anything can be done for some $$$.

I had some decent work done at Carolina Custom Metal Finishing, but it was just stripping and re-chrome. No heavy work. Price was OK and turn around about 2 months or less. Maybe 3 years ago.

It will be hard to find anyone that will take those pipes on, maybe to far gone and if they did it would be way out in price as well it will be a lot of time and effort from the chromers and it mite not last long before they fall apart, it would be a lot cheaper to find someone to make a set of pipes to look the same and to be chromed, your pipes are rusted badly on the outside, think what they will be like inside the pipes, getting all the pits out there would not be much metal left to last, if it was me I would find someone that has a mandle bender and get a set of headers made up for the bike and there would always be someone that make relica mufflers of the same style, if you are going to ride the bike its the only way to go in my opion if you want them to last forever, or spend the money on aftermaket pipes and mufflers.

Thats what I was fearing the most that they were gone a bit too far. I'll use the info to haggle the seller down a bit and the search will continue for a new set. I'll keep you guys posted.
