Thamk you for anny sugestions There are two patches twice the size of thumb prints where the chrome has flaked away from the inside of the front rim near the spokes . The rust isn't deep or dirty ( ten years in the dark shed) Wnny advice is welcome Cheers Ian

Oxalic acid will kill any rust but leave the chrome untouched as long as its diluted properly, then paint the rust free steel silver.

I lived with a flaked off patch painted with silver on the front rim of my bike for many years. I was the only one who noticed it. When it got worse and started sporting rust "pimples" I decided to deal with it. I discovered that buying a clean used rim off eBay was cheaper than having the original re-chromed. I used that opportunity to have stainless spokes installed by Buchanan's. Dunno why the rear rim never suffered the same fate.

When I brought my new 74 Commando back in 76 the chrome on my wheels started to lift just after 6 month on both front and rear wheels and was replaced under warranty then a few years later the replacement rims started to do the same cause was rust lifting the chrome and been working at a chrome shop for 12 months after leaving school my impression was the rims were not treated right before chroming, so when I started my conversion to the Featherbed frame in 1980 I replaced the rims with Akront Alloy rims and they are still as good as the day they were fitted 40 years ago.
