Chasing Perfect Tail

In 1973 I T-boned a car on my way back from Blackbushe drag races riding a 65 Tiger 90 with a rack on the tank. Apart from a dislocated hip (leg facing the wrong way), my nuts tested the rack to the Nth level, or did the rack test my nuts? Anyway, I can't recommend the tank rack at all.

as ludwig said jack the shock mounts so it sits level, then cut the rear loop right back and ditch the rear light, winker combo....

70's has a lot to answer for

If you do decide to go with that rack, get yourself one of these and complete the package:

I too have reserves about the tail end of the roadster. I like the BritBikes cafe seats, but prefer the dual seat as the hump on the single seat looks too big to my eye and seems out of proportion. I'm also looking at a new tail light arrangement as the rectangular '73 on unit is uber-bulky; still looking.

One option to clean up the rear is the fastback tail section and seat which was revolutionary at the time and still looks very clean IMO; the beehive tail light also looks great in that application. The trouble is that it won't fit in with the Roadster tank, or at least I've never seen the two together, which means a new FB tank or an Interstate tank and custom seat to make the bike an "Interback", which, again IMO is the best, but priciest, solution.

My $0.02. :P

...I've always wanted a roadster tank with the old triumph rack mounted on the tank but need a spare steel tank to experiment with.

You do know they are called "Ballcatchers"?

The missus took my nuts years ago and keeps em in a jar next to the bed. They get the odd shake when I get a bit out of hand!!
I hadn't really considered the whole rip ya goolies off with a tank rack but now that you mention it it send chills up my spine.
I've deleted that idea.....forever

Looks good to me. I've been thinking about downsizing my bulbous `73 tail light with this smaller light.
(just ordered from OB).

Like Bruce Springfield song, I'm Born in the USA so trying to cover it up looks best to me.

LOL you boys, can't make every bike look like a hardly davidson....

Oh yeah I'd totally forgot about that special expedient Peel feature. About a week before my 1st ever long distance 1000 mile rally attendence beyond a couple 100 miles, Peel's long dong Dunstall mega broke its normal mounts, tried to scab on spring supports but didn't work out well on THE gravel and didn't have parts enough to rehang a peashooter so made do with open header headlight hanger. Peel was in her absolute worse state of tune on that trip, daul Amals Combat head and not tuned for suddenly wide open pipe so almost constantly stalling to get going form a start or creep over grassy sections but boy howdy what a wheelie machine with the extra mass on back. Remember the Tunnel of Love scene where a modern pulls up and nods but Norton creep just sneers and looks away, had similar with a modern on way back at city main square intersection - asked what make of cycle, "'72 Norton Combat Commado" light flicked green but gave her a bit more gun than intended to wheelie all the way through intersection leaving a good ole Norton Snortin impression. Still ain't figured out next Peel's rear view which I hope will be only a short view for most.

Peel loaded with most the bedding and extra tent for Wesley on his '71 with only HiRider sissy bar to strap stuff to, big awning in blue package and red box unfolds to 4 place table. Full tool kit and vital spares and jugs of moonshine out of sight. Norton clutch spring puller bolted to skid plate'. D/t old man camp staff chugging 4 big long glups down to instantly turn into happy singing knee slapping tippy toe dancer waddling back to office hundreds of yrds away I got distracted to nip up the puller so later standing on pegs full upright at 90 on heaved seam cement road it came off under rear tire I thought was just a bigger bump but had broke axle leaving 1/2 fog of smoke but Wes pulled like 115+ to catch up couple miles behind to pull be over in nick of tire or might of died on a blow out with broken axle out of control till landing on skull. Nine lives spared and still counting.

As usual Steve, an interesting story, but this isn't exactly what I had in mind to fill the gap from back of seat to end of rear guard!

Have decided to keep the little rack and the standard light, though will re-engineer the mount. Need some tight-radius right-angle steel tube sections to mount the rack and have been thinking that cutting up a cheapo folding chair might be the go here.
