Working on a 73 750 basket case. Put the primary together completely. Yes, the inner primary is properly shimmed. Put the outer cover on and the chaincase center stud sticks out past the cover 1/2", should be about flush with the cover. AFAIK, all pre-MKIII Commandos have the same stud. Any idea where this one came from?

Did you measure in hand and compare to others? Just curious.

The Alton starter kit uses a different length center stud but I can't remember how it's different?

The Alton stud is close to the same length as the original, but fixes to the trans cradle with a bolt, and has a reduced length hex to accommodate the thickened inner primary wall. It would need a pile of shims to work with a stock inner primary, but would not protrude any further through the outer primary. The thread is different as well (coarse vs. fine)

Just tossing it out there, since I don't use this part, but have it. P11 primary cover stud sticks out there a way so that the foot peg brace can be attached (dumbest idea ever), but it may not really be any longer since the primary inner and outer slapped together are thinner where that stud goes through. Here are the approximate measurements, and a pic:

Long section from hex: 2.883"
Hex section: 1.304"
Short end: .882"

Here's the culprit. I guess I could have cut it off, but I was concerned about getting filings in the primary. Anyway, it's all back together now and the long one is in the recycle bin - don't want this happening again!

The days of hanging a beach towel from mine are over. I don't know what I'm talking about 99.9% of the time.

Ok, the tangent is fun but does anyone know the answer to the original question?
