Center stand help

Hi Guys. I just got really nice center stand off of fleabay. It has been freshly powder-coated.... looks great! I think that I may have ordered the wrong spacers though from Old Britts. The stand was advertised as a 72 center stand so I ordered spacers from OB for a 72. These just don't look right. The spacers are very small and leave a lot of room on the hole on the stand. Shouldn't they be a relative tight fit? Should I have ordered the stepped spacer?

Center stand help

That's why they call it Fleabay.
Just a thought but if you can find a bushing to fit the spacer then you could just drill the worn out stand to fit the bushing, no?
A piece of 1/2" galv pipe nipple ID is just about the same size as the OD of the spacer.
Thread the stand with 1/2" pipe threads, screw in a nipple, shave off the excess flush and drill the ID to fit the nipple.
Can you tell I don't have a welder or I would suggest you just weld up the holes and redrill.
You could find out where the guy who sold you the stand liver and go kick his @$$.

ah man that nice powder coat to consider options, hm, BINGO!
Rough off the black surrounding the hole. Lightly grease the bush, assemble off bike on bench, stand sideways, tape and damn around the hole, mix up JBW, dabble in, let set then flip and repeat. Put on cradle and file here and there to allow sweet function for as long as it does. Spray black of course for those peering up under there, like your own eye pleasure. So far I've lucked on on ebay.

I think you may need the stepped spacers indeed, this said, the holes in the centerstand do wear out over time.
Mine had a similar problem, and I solved it by welding up the holes, and drilling to the correct diameter,
Of course this action will ruin your powder coating....

I think it might have to get ruined anyway (at least on the inner face, and on the side that swings up against the engine/trans cradle) - If I powder coated mine it would never go back on the frame.

FYI, the sizes on the stepped bush for my MKIII is 0.67 aand 0.55 inch. Perhaps the Fleabay seller misrepresented the year for the stand.

Well the seller accepts returns so it is going back to him. I am out the money I spent in shipping. Oh well. I didn't even think about the holes being too big. There wasn't a side shot of the stand on the listing... but even it there had been, it would have been difficult to tell. Thanks guys. I guess I will order a new one. Old britts has them but seems a bit pricey. Any suggestions?

All you need are the stepped spacers (064873) x2.

Yes, I have a suggestion!

I took my center stand off 15 years because I just don't like the idea that it flops up and
down with the spring possibly breaking and thus it dragging, in addition to dragging around the weight.

Instead, I have a Pit Bull rear stand for any wheel removal or chain lubes.

Cheaper than a center stand and a piece of cake to put the bike on it

Pit Bull web site, made to fit Commandos!

Mg 1st Combat lost its center stand on the way to hwy but a farmer had some baling cord to get me going again w/o the clanging of one leg striking ground then frame. Removed it to distinctly feel the slight lack of mass on THE Gravel behavior, which was good and started her on her ongoing wt. loss diet. But unless a beginer nut case let me on one special project, I love the center stands as long as they last for real life needs, especially away from home and if that don't make the best sense then sorry ya ain't gotten enough time travel on a Cdo yet to know what I mean. One of next Peel biggiest complexities, unsloved as yet, is how to remove most the mass of two stands but retain their function. I'm more educated now by the pointing out of off the shelf stepped washer/busher, cool. If this stand is actually worn bigger hole then save the JBW and have you hole open to turn round and machinist make a step spacer washer busher, in something that dont' rust on the power coat hidden way up under in road grime.

The ends of my centerstand were bent and the holes in the cradle were stretched on my 850, so it needed some work just to get it back to stock. I made a couple discs that fit the holes in the centerstand, drilled 3/8" holes in their center, and had them welded into the ends of the centerstand. I got some bar stock that was around 3/4" and cut it to fit between the ends of the centerstand and put 3/8" threaded holes in the ends. I got some thick walled tubing that had an ID that gave a sliding fit for the bar and welded it into the cradle, with the holes in the cradle drilled out to take the 3/4" bar, so it passes straight through. The ends of the bar stand just proud of the sides of the cradle. The centerstand is bolted to the bar and the greased bar rotates in the tubing. It strengthened the centerstand considerably and it eliminates the play with the original bushes. It can't be done without removing the cradle, but it's worth thinking about if one's at that stage in a resto.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I got in touch with Jim Noll and he is going to see if he has something that will work for me. He said that he does still have the part 064873 that LAB recommended but Jim said that he thought my stand holes may be too large. I am sending him the diameter specs today and will see if he has something that will work. I will let you know if we find a solution.... It would have been a lot easier just buying the full kit instead of piecing this together. Lesson learned.

064873 C/STAND SPACER .682x.453x.300"

Well, I went out and bought a caliper tool.... my dimensions are .68x.45x.300.... Looks like the above listed part is the way to go! Thanks again.

Thanks for all the help guys. I was able to get the centerstand on using the 064873 spacers!!!

The spring was a challenge to get on....

I tried the washer trick. It was close, but with the coins in the spring, I couldn't get the end of the spring into the stand.
I tried using the spring puller too.... same issue, the side of the spring would touch the stand not allowing me to get the end of the spring in the stand hole.

I finally disconnected the bolts from the from the frame, attached the spring to the frame and the stand, slid the stand in place in to place lining up the hole (With ease) and bolted it right up. Couldn't have been easier. I wish that I had tried that way first.

I tell you what.... this centerstand is not all it is cracked up to be....

One, it is not exactly easy to get the bike on the stand. I certainly wouldn't try in public...Am I not doing it right. How do you guys put your centerstand down?

Also, I have my norton on a big square of vinyl flooring in my garage so that the oil doesn't soak into my floor. Well, if I start my bike on the stand.... it vibrates across the room!

I only have a centerstand on my combat, and it is easy to use. On My yamaha xs650 I use the centerstand all the time, but no matter where I park it the bike walks all over. It's kind of funny.
