I have a pair of rods where some strange DPO has marked them as timing side and drive side by center punching the letters TS and DS on the outer side of the rod. Yes, I know, don't ask me why someone would do that . A marker pen works very well, or even a scriber would be better, but no, he used a punch and a hammer.

The marks are well away from the front & rear of the rods, more in the web in the middle. Not excessively deep either. Other than that the rods look good.

Question is, can they be used? Unfortunately I don't have any photos :-(

/Steve.

Depends what you're gonna use it for Steve.

If it's for gentle Sunday rides to the little mermaid for ice cream, no problem.

But if this is your intended track day bike, I personally would definitely not use them.

The risk of the potential carnage just ain't worth it.

It could result in a very expensive cost saving exercise IMHO.

If they are not deep then gently file and then polish taking the minimum of material off.

Yes, that's one of the thoughts running through my mind. I feel my wallet getting lighter by the hour....

On the bright side though, a set of Maney high compression pistons + standard rods lands quite close to Jim S' lovely bits. But then there is our tax man... :-(

Hmm, needs some more thought.

.

But surely if we were going to be sensible and looking after our wallets then we would all ride a modern Honda.(just thinking out loud)

On the plus side a lighter wallet is easier to carry :D

Considering they have already been used, then you have an answer. If you were to race them, all bets would be off. Being in the web, I would use them on the road, and I ride like I stole it and if there is a problem it will stop if it not happy, and then would just need to re-build it better next time.

Remember, these were designed in day when complex computers for stress calcs where not available - so they made it stronger, though probably most of the margin was ate up by the time it got to 850. I was involved in a feasibility study to fit a 6'' gun in 4.5'' trunnions - the trunnions designed in the 60's when modeled for use with the new system they were well within parameters, it was other issues that caused the study to stall.
