Had this lent to me by an engine builder recently to get the exact same idle on the carbs
Anyone on the forum had experience with one of these?
With the bike warmed and running, press it up to the mouth of the carb(if space allows) , rotate the centre dial in (or out), to get the ball in the glass tube to rise on first carb, note where on the tube, then put it over the mouth of the second carb and adjust idle to match height of ball in tube to the first carb. (cable lengths must be set first)
Called 'Synchro Test'

I had one of these years ago but gave it to a friend who was doing a lot of VARA racing at the time & I never got it back, never used it so I can't speak to it's usefulness. Two years ago a neighbor who sold his bikes and all related stuff gave me one of those Mercury Four carb adjusters & I've never used it eighther. If I ever get around to switching over two the two Amals I suppose I'll try it. I like the one you have better.

Hey Dave, did you ever try yours on your bike, the reason i ask is yours looks smaller and therefore would fit in easier on the carbs.
I cab get this one on one carb only (JS carbs) as the ignition switch is in the road on the left carb.
Will mock up a right angle hose or tube to assist
Regards Mike

No, I haven't tried it on the Norton. I may when I get ready to put it away this winter. I have to remove the ham can and filter to get it on.

It seemed to work pretty good on the Z. I stored that Z in the barn for about 3 years for a friends brother and he finally gave it to me. The brake cylinders were rusted shut, the mice had a field year inside, so I soaked the inside in vinegar for a few days, fixed the brakes and got some new tires and drove it for about 3 years. Only trouble, it was an auto and everything but first gave out going to work one day and it was impossible to find parts for the auto trans. I took the battery out of it at work and sold it for $100. I'm not sure the guy ever got it going. The underside was pretty rusted up by then. Too bad, I really liked that car. With a good set of tires, I bet it would have been a nice handler, but I had some pretty cheap all wx tires on it. Not a bad freebie for 3 years though, that would put about 75K on it. 100 miles a day.

I think that was one good looking car.

That is a great old tool, hopefully there is room to use it. I use the manometer style, on the balance tube. I find this fine tunes the twin carbs and really sweetens up the engine at idle and low rpm operation.
Cheers Richard

i used one on my bike - it wasn't as accurate as a mercury stick sort of arrangement as i had to close the center dial thing quite a bit to get an accurate reading and it would influence the idle - if you have the balance tubes on manifolds they'll give a better reading w/ vacuum line to a carb sync

you may have a problem with how close the carbs are on a standard amal setup on a norton too (i had mikunis with different manifolds)

i used it on my TR-3 and TR-4 (sadly gone now) and they were pretty good for that and fun

oh and very nice pink shirt dave - Miami vice sort of thing going on there

You didn't notice the pink windshield wipers that match the shirt? I was trying for outrageous then. Nothing to loose when you're 50 with a blonde beard. That Z was almost as much of a chick magnet as the Norton, I said almost.

Dave

yikes- your a brave man posting that and pointing it out on an internet forum

i have a set of vac gauges as well, still having trouble with one JS carb at idle, left one ,double checked valve clearance, checked for manifold leaks, checked slides are opening simultaneously , cable pulls etc. Runs sweet off idle all the way to WOT, just hunts a little at idle is all, but only one carb.
Checked valves for leakage when changing the head gasket a week or so ago as well.
I installed a balance tube so i could use the vac gauges.
