Hi can anyone tell me the modern day equivalent that is closest to candy apple red for my 75 850 interstate and also what colour should the decals be Thanks in advance for any replies Brian

What ever you end up with Do pay Extra for the nano size Gold Dust to put in the Red and the clear to add cosmic richness depth of eye to tongue sensation.

...just remembered, you can see my candy apple red bike on this page, if it helps: Broken link removed.

Candy apple paint is a base coat of silver flake type paint, and then coat(s) of a clear red lacquer.
The number of coats determines how light/dark the red is.
And then probably a clearcoat over it.

Hobots gold dust sounds optional....

Oddly, the NOC website doesn't have a auto paint match for this colour finish.

Grey logo etc seems a little off, silver would be more correct . ?

My bike had original paint yet and the decals were silver. Tank were in good shape but the side cover '850 commando' decals had to be replaced. Stripes were still perfect.

My beloved sorely missed forever P!! had the best Candy Apple Red I've seen and mostly d/t the fairly light gold dust [Not Metal Flake] sparkles that took a while to sink in what was drawing the eye so deep into the red depths. Best flavor I can compare the color sensation to is a big Red Delicious apple sprinkled with chocolate.

Here's one I did earlier - I've another currently in the works - silver base with clear red - as Rohan says, keep spraying and it gets darker; easy to over-do
I've also seen it done over a gold base which looked good, but not 'correct', as far as it goes...

I was fortunate to have an NOS panel to work from and it wasn't a particularly intense red like the majority of re-sprays I've seen

The link to Precision example is the set Craig did for me several years ago. I had an original sidecover in near perfect shape
that he matched the silver and red candy to. We strayed from stock in that the stripe and logo were painted on and then the
clear coat was applied. It came out quite nice and very close match to the original despite the pics. Craig is great to work with.

I posted up the formula for Candy Red on the P11 thread over in 'Other Classic Motorcycles'

White primer
Medium silver metallic base coat
several coats of Candy Red
clear topcoat (if desired)

When I painted my Ranger, I masked off the bottom of the tank where it sits over the frame - this part of the tank still had original paint in great shape. When I took the masking off after applying the candy, the color was a match.

I think all the 850 red bikes got silver decals, but I prefer the gold.
CANDY APPLE RED

This pic was before I did the 'D' stripe on the Ranger

The G15 is exactly the same color, but this bike had the silver 'D' stripe, which I did by masking off the base coat before applying the candy

After Candy:

Finished
CANDY APPLE RED

All three bikes are exactly the same color, but the gold stripe gives the impression that the base coat is gold.

HI, just finished a candy red interstate tank and side covers for a friend, he wanted something a few shades darker so i used a titanium base coat instead of silver, be interested to hear what people think, cheers peter

If the colour suits your customer then thats all that matters........... I'm more impressed with the overall "Paint Job"... Looks very nice from here.. A good/better camera would have showed the quality of the "paint job"....

Balcatta ah!

Hi olChris, the point of the post was the base coat is a better place to change the finished appearance rather than the number of candy coats, i see your in wa are you going to murrays bash on the 20th september? if so ill see you there cheers pete,

True to a degree, but the choices of metallic undercoats are limited in most paint systems. Typically silver, gold or white. I painted mine about 8 years ago using R-M Carizzma red candy over silver. I used silver automotive pinstriping tape and put clear over it. If I had to do it again I'd airbrush the stripes instead.

Peter, I love the darker shaded pieces. Was the top pic the original color or was that another set that you painted?

Hi, all the pictures are the same tank, how it looks is very dependant on the ambient light,I'm not a professional painter but i think the finish is ok, my friend wanted something a little different , attached photos of low ambient light and normal light to show how different effect, cheers pete
