I live in south central Pennsylvania. Visibility is down to about 3 mile due to the dense smoke from fires in Canada, approx 8/11 hours driving time distance from me. How many others are affected?

Man, I was blown away to see THAT in the news.

Are they aware of how the fire(s) were started? Purely "coincidental"?

I can imagine this magnitude of damage will affect world timber prices significantly...

Sorry for the bad air … 200+ families lost their homes in the conflagration , big thanks to USA water bombers who showed up fast !

Sorry to hear of this disaster...can't understand why people are being held back though

Thank you Shane, for ferreting out the back stories.

Sorry for this disaster. We are spared the smoke on the Seacoast here, the swirling NorEaster of rain has been keeping it away. Hopefully some rain comes to Canada soon.

It has ! , both of fires that caused all damage are holding , folks were informed today if they had home to return to or not , I think they start going home tomorrow , the fires sure got away quick in both locations …. without all the help from several of our neighbours , still be burning ….

I was reading earlier that the authorities (RCMP) had made arrests in Alberta and Calgary from the first fire outbreaks....investigators working on it

Gov. say the 2 fires here that caused so much loss were both caused by “human activity” , the fine for breaking fire ban went from $237.00 to $25,000 plus costs of remediation, overnight … folks that lost homes have no place to go ( housing here in short supply) , plus looking at 1-2yrs before construction on new could start … a real life shit show ….

Seems a talented man with a framing hammer could make money building houses.....

I will keep digging into this disaster...but from what I'm seeing alot of the recent fires that have broken out based on satellite images seems to have simultaneously broken out at the same time...
I hope justice is served and the poor people effected get comfort and help by their fellow countrymen...
Forrest conditions chart of effected areas in late April...

I'm in Virginia and the air is smokey. I watched a YouTube video from Northwestern Pennsylvania where is was much heavier than here. That's 2500 almost straight driving miles between the main fires and here! Yesterday, the smoke was visible just looking at things about 25 feet away and it smelled strong. Today it's noticeable when looking at something about 150 feet away and the smell is less.

Foreign Allies Gather Amid Canada's Historic Forest Fire Crisis

Canada has received pledges of increased assistance from allies worldwide as it battles an unprecedented wildfire season that has ravaged the country, with the US already having deployed hundreds of firefighters and committed to providing further support.

Countries such as South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand have also extended their help, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Thursday that France, Portugal, and Spain are also dispatching over 280 firefighters.

About 4.3 million hectares (10.6 million acres) of forests have already burned in Canada, roughly 15 times the annual average of the past decade. Warm, dry conditions are expected to persist in the months ahead.

Hanna RCMP investigate several grass fires along Alberta Highway 9
June 22, 2023
Hanna, Alberta – On June 21, 2023, at 6:39 p.m., Hanna RCMP responded to reports of multiple grass fires along Highway 9, between Hanna and Youngstown. It is believed that the fires were intentionally set, and are similar in nature to multiple grass fires that occurred along Highway 9, west of the community of Craigmyle, on June 13, 2023.

People seem to be unnecessarily stirring the embers here looking for the bad guy or conspiracy theory behind the Canadian fires/smoke that is drifting S into the US. Is the air quality compromised? Yes. Does it blow out and freshen up in a few days with a wind shift? Yes. Are some fires started accidentally by people? Yes. Are there a few nuts lighting fires? Yes. Are arsonists responsible for the majority of fires and smoke? No.

As the NOAA map below shows (current as of 6/30/23 – 8 AM ET), the smoke is primarily coming from Canada’s western provinces. For several decades northern Saskatchewan and many of the northern sections of the western provinces burn. It’s dry, hot, there’s lightning, and most of the fires occur in remote areas of western Canada. I’ve seen them and been trapped behind fire lines on occasion when canoe trekking in northern SK wilderness. There is always concern when fires approach populated areas, but for the most part the burning areas are remote and large, thus little can be done aside from attempts to protect populated areas and try to control where the burn is allowed to go. Simply stated there is no way to access much of the burning wilderness areas, thus the fires are allowed to burn themselves out. It’s mother nature in 2023 and we have little control over her day-to-day activities.
