Can I remove the Assimilator?

I have an electronic charge warning unit fitted (from ICM) and so can I simply disconnect the wires from the assimilator, tie them up out of the way, and discard the clumsy sprung assimilator unit? As far as I can tell looking on the wiring diagram there should be no cause for concern.
 
thanks to both, as soon as I saw the post it was a matter of seconds to remove it and get a tad more tidiness under the tank.

simply put, it’s a spring mounted widget that tells the red warning light to light up and go off if It’s charging or not. I’ve got an eliminator from ICM that is more reliable, so I’m told.
 
Thank you...... That damned thing has been dead since 1979. Still in there though.
 
If you want a warning light to work without using the assimilator, just correctly wire in a 5 terminal relay. You need to do it so that power on lights up the light, using the charging circuit as the earth return. ign on and no run means warning light operates. engine running above idle means the charging current balances or overrides the power current so no power to the control side of the relay. Its easier to look at a wiring diagram but I dont know how to do that on this forum.

A stupid device that, when working, will light the red light if the stator is not making AC voltage. In theory, it tells you if you're not charging, but in truth it just tells you that a portion of the charging circuit is at least somewhat working.

I throw it away and install the madass140 oil pressure switch and have that connected to the red light. When you turn the ignition on the light is red. When you start the bike and have oil pressure, the light goes off. If you lose oil pressure the light comes back on. For those in the US, PM me if you have questions about obtaining or installing his switch.
 
IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING LONG DISTANCES, IT PAYS TO KNOW YOUR BIKE IS CHARGING. I was travelling south one time and my warning light came on somewhere before Taumarunui, I could not find the problem easily, so rather than hold everyone up I was travelling with, I bought a new battery. The existing one drained out at Levin [190 miles or so ] so I then swapped them over. Fixed the problem in Blenheim.

my turn signal cadence tells me where my charge system is at.
