camshaft end float

Hi,
First post on here, well the Commando forum anyway. I go by tri-man here and some other places, and Stein Roger on Brit Bike. I'm primarily a Triumph guy, but enjoy working on other makes as well, even Japanese.

I have a 72 Combat in my shop, with the oil return and breathing modified. The SS cam is worn and knowing the owner's riding habits I have adviced him to go with a standard cam. As I understand it I can fit a standard cam with the steel thrust washer 06.1086 and forget about the amount of end play? As long as there is any, of course. The engine has the scrolled flangeless bush.

I have some other questions regarding the Combat state of tune too, but will make a new post not to hi-jack this one.

Regards

You might review this again:
camshaft-end-float-t11825-15.html#p344008

plus I emphasize :
ONLY the OEM 72-73 750 (200000+) used the stupid 06-2600 / 06-2601 bushing-washer system
This system should be removed/replaced and or at a minimum modified to remove the killer break off tabs.

To a large degree I will emphasize that only breaking off the 06-2601 tabs is IMO still severe butchery...
WHY? now you have two washers, the steel 06-1086 AND the 06-2601, neither is keyed to the case like a replacement bronze bush. The replaceable bronze bush takes the thrust (and wear) however the tabless 06-2601 can now rotate on the case, which is never meant to be a wear surface. You would then be then sacrificing the case and only benefiting by trying to insure you don't do a TOTAL blow up.

Thanks Dave,

I get the message. I was surprised to find this set up in the first place, I don't like floating thrust washers or shims anywhere.
I will remove it and fit the later parts.

Regards,
SR
