After being apart for over a year and a half I can only find one of the Camshaft chain tensioner backing plates. Not sure which one. Can someone please tell me what the thickness of the 2 backing plates are? Thanks in advance for your help, Rwanz

Wow, over 50 views and no answer, if I was at home I would have gone and measured an old pair.

The thick one must be around 3 mm but a guess only, the thin one maybe 2 mm or less.

In fairness, most sensible folk probably have them tucked away INSIDE their engines !

I get the thin one at 0.0560“ and the thick one at 0.1115”

2.83 mm and 1.42 mm. (I thought afterward the thinner plate might have been quite a bit thinner than I remembered) so not bad for a guess.

Thanks for taking the physical time to help another member.

Then there is the matter of which plate goes on first: thick or thin. I recall there is a difference of opinion on this.
Just to stir it up....

That's not uncommon here, but the workshop manuals are all consistent on the subject so there should be no difference of opinion :)

BTW, take one properly assembled apart and there is no question. The thick will be bowed in and there will be marks from the "shakeproof" washers. From that it's easy to tell that it goes on the outside and it's easy to tell which way is up. The only thing that needs to be remembered is that the thin has the other end up.

Greg is correct, the thin plate goes in first and the thick plate goes in last. No confusion there.
Thinking about it a bit more, the "difference of opinion" was my confusion as to why the long side goes down for the thin inner plate, and up for the thick outer plate. At the time of reassembly it made no sense to me at all. Still makes no sense.

I've been out of pocket since I posted this question dealing with a family death in Ohio and now in California with my parents Trust. Looking forward to being back home in Georgia next week... Anyway thanks to all for your help with this question. Now to find a replacement so I can get back to assembling the engine. Happy Holidays to all!
