Hey Guys, I dismantled my gearbox yesterday to replace bearings and bushings and such and I broke 1 tooth off of the gear on the back of the cam plate. This happened when I tried loosening the bolt that holds the cam plate in. I don't know what I did wrong, I was following the notes from Old Britts which simply say "remove the two bolts holding in the cam plate and the quadrant" , so I did. Anyway, should I definitely replace the cam plate? Will it work missing 1 tooth? Fixable?

Thanks
Ben

Ben,

Press out the shaft that as the gear on it, turn it 45° (2 teeth) anticlockwise and press it back in. The camplate gear has 16 teeth and the quadrant only 8 or 9 so the missing tooth will not really be missed.

Bert

MARK THE ALIGNMENT OF THE TEETH FIRST!

Re-align before pressing in again.

Thanks Bert, I was hoping there would be a simple fix and I understand what you are talking about. However, I'm not 100% clear on what Paul said. Which teeth am I marking? Am I marking just so I know that I've moved 2 teeth and not more or less? Explain why I need to mark which teeth and I will understand.

Thanks again,
Ben

You just want the alignment ot the "new" teeth's profile to be the same as the "old" teeth, or perhaps I'm missing something like the shaft itself is splined to the cam plate?

Thanks for responding Paul. The "shaft" is actually splined to the cam plate, so all is well. However, I will make a witness mark to make sure I do move 2 spaces.

Thanks.
Ben

Well, if it's splined, you'll need to check and see if the alignment defaults to the same relative spacing, or find the closest match-up.

Perhaps the alignment isn't all that critical, and Bert's advice is simply correct...

Can someone tell me how you remove the cam plate please. :?

I'm just going through the 750's gearbox which looks pretty good so far,it has a SKF ball bearing (layshaft) with Gt Britain on the outer race which seemed odd. (or not) since the bike came from the USA.
The engine still had its original MRJ bearings.

I looked through the manual but can't see anywhere about removing the cam plate.
The hex head underneath must retain the splined end of the shaft but am hesitant to crank on it with the quadrant against the shell after reading this thread in a search.
With the quadrant in the down position the cam plate spins but not when it is up ??
The shaft that the quadrant is on spins when the hex is turned on the outside of the shell ?

Otherwise the shell is looking good as does the gear set. :D

There is a hole in the cam plate.
If you rotate it anti clockwise looking at it a 5/16 allen key can be inserted in the hole and it will come up against the quadrant arm itself when you rotate clockwise.
If you hold the other end of the allen key so it stays square in the hole the bolt underneath will crack fairly easily without any pressure being put on the teeth.
I put a little heat on the cam plate centre and the hex head bolt with a paint stripper for good measure.
I couldn't find any reference to its removal in the PDF workshop manual.
