Hmmm. I have been pretty quiet about my Tri-Spark after being a big supporter during the early Tri-Spark wars. I went through two units. CNW took good care of me, replacing the first one free of charge and sending me a 100% refund after the second failed (two units in two years). Matt told me I could upgrade my entire electrical system (it's stock other than the changes required for the EI) or I could shop somewhere else. He suggested the Pazon Sure-Fire. I can't be unhappy about the service I got, but I am still sad to have lost the Tri-Spark. However, mine did exactly what you describe before failing completely. Both times. I was pretty meticulous with the search through the system and I have yet to find anything I can put a finger on that would suggest a problem with the system. Other than it is stock. One day it will get a complete upgrade, until them I am no longer running that unit. I am waiting to see if somebody builds a truly bullet-proof ignition. (I have heard rumors they exist for a cost)

Russ
me too!!
3 units- sold the fourth brand new one replaced under warranty.
They do make a bullet proof unit. It's called a joe hunt magneto :-)

some of these posts are getting me a little worried i made the right decision when i ordered a Trispark 3 days ago.

It might not have been made by Joe Hunt, but didn’t the first batch of Commandos come with a magneto :?:

The points can be improved. I wish I had the drawings for this one, the cam has been changed a bit. The brass insert should be no problem to make. The slots for the advance dogs wear out too and wonder if they couldn't be hardened.

For everyone who has complained, I suppose there are 100s of us out here who have had no problems with TriSpark.

I will put the bike back on the road on Friday & try again. I've fitted a new Lucas ignition switch and a new fuse holder. If it misfires I will firstly connect the Trispark directly, then pop on another pair of coils. This should prove what the problem is. I have decided not to vent or remove the points cover as this ignition is supposed to work under it.If it doesn't it is not fit for purpose.
In the mean time I have been out on both of my Airheads yesterday & today, R100RS & R100R Mystic. It's hard work but somebody has to do it.

Cheers,

Martyn.

The Lucas AAU is the single thing most responsible for the downfall of the British motorcycle industry. The second thing most responsible are the zinc slides that Amal put into the zinc bodied Concentrics. When your British single or twin won't idle or start reliably, you buy something else.

Yes, DogT, worse than the bushing in the AAU were the slots on the bob weights. Notches would wear in the interior of those slots and then the AAU would "hang" in the full advance position, more or less permanently, until for some reason unpredictably from time to time the bob weights would "release" and allow the low speed retarded timing to be reinstated. We would lock down the AAU in the full advance position and then just put up with the kick backs on starting. I bought a new AAU and then got the new bob weights hard chromed on their insides; that fixed it but there was no fix for the slides in those days.

My Tri-Spark has been flawless; haven't touched the points cover since the day I installed the unit and that was years ago.

I can't fault my Pazon either, just sayin' if you want to play with the AAU.

I guess while we're on the subject, can anyone tell me what points I have here on my Combat? I am going to be heading to my local shop soon and might as well see if they have a spare set. I have no idea what the difference between 6, 7, 8ca, etc points are.

The reason I went to Trispark is the kickback I was getting with points. Never had a kickback with Trispark and the idle improvement was a bonus.

But to be fair, kickback on the Commando, which I get a fair bit on mine as I am hopeless at setting the bike up, is but a mere tickle compared to the kickback I get on the Matchless. On that big single I really make sure I get the timing right, and the fuel, to save my right leg!! :)

kick back is not good to kick rachet to tranny shaft and cog bushes and sometimes ones lower limb so suggest ya back intial timing back just a wee wee bit till nil hint of kick back, then put a light on it for some objective marks to record or remember. This will help towards one step on it starts and stable sure idle yet the adv. rise soon as off idle for that nice Norton spunk sense.

"That's the 6CA assembly." It's as good a setup as they get (better than earlier setups).
They don't look too bad. It's refreshing to see the parts that move or don't move; turn screws with screwdriver; touch with fingers; only simple tools needed; electronics give me a headache.

As promised, an update on the ignition problem.
Got the bike out to go for a ride this morning. It tried to fire a couple of times then......nothing! Checked for voltage at the unit & it was fine. The LED wasn't lighting at all. Phoned Phil at LP Williams & have arranged to swop it for a new one (latest version) It seems it's not unusual for this to happen.
Thanks to everyone for your help & suggestions with this.

Cheers,

Martyn.
