Cable Question

My Mk 3 has eaten 3 Veglia tachs in the past 800 miles . I just got 2 of them back from being refurbished at Palo Alto . I fitted a new tach drive cable when I got the bike . It is my understanding that these cables are often too long and need to be filed down . Can anyone tell me how much or some procedure to insure that I don't break another one ?

The upper end of the inner cable should not protrude from the outer by more than 7/16".

Although it's best to actually check the depth of the slot in the instrument to ensure that the slot depth is slightly greater than the amount of protruding inner cable, even if it is 7/16" or less.
