Hi all,
Just looking for a bit of guidance with my early Commando. The previous owner pulled the bike completely to pieces. Even removed spokes from wheels. I bought a jigsaw puzzle.
He had the frame painted but damaged the certification plate when it was removed prior to painting. I have a new plate for stamping, but am curious about the build date of the machine. Most forum posts I've read concerning these plates state that the build date is included on the certification plate. Mine doesn't.
It is an early "Atlas engined" machine with the tacho drive gearbox poking out of the timing cover and points behind the cylinders. The frame has the horizontal bracing tube which was not included on the earliest ones.
Even though the certification plate mentions US laws, I was under the impression that it was Australian delivered (which is where I am). Was it compulsory for the build date to be included on US delivered bikes? But not Aussie ones? Or home market ones?
I have a "pedestrian slicer" licence plate for the front mudguard/fender which was not the style used in Australia at the time. Perhaps the bike was a very early "special" or promotional import to Australia? Who knows?
It was last registered in 1973 and I have owned it for 35 years.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Steve

It's not all that unusual for the date stamp to be missing.

Thanks for your replies,
I have seen build dates/vin lists on the www and considered Feb '69 was about right. But what puzzled me was why there was no date stamp on my plate. But as L.A.B. says above "It was not that unusual". There you go.
I'll leave it off the new certification plate then, because that's the way I found it.
Best wishes,
Steve
