What is the wrapped exhaust pipe all about? When did this start?
Originally a racer thing.
2 benefits:
1. Keeps gases hot, hotter gasses have more volume, so if more volume goes through same space, it has to go faster. Gas velocity was therefore a reason for its effects on pressure pulses etc. But this clearly only matters in very specific circumstances.
2. Reduces radiated heat to other components so aids engine / oil cooling etc. This is mainly a benefit on fully fairerd bikes and also race cars and was the main reason I used to wrap race pipes.
It can also reduce noise by a db or 2, which can be a big benefit on a race bike struggling to meet the noise limits.
As Baz said, it’s now a hipster styling thing whereby exhausts are wrapped for no actual reason or benefit at all, apart from styling, and that in itself is ironic as it’s often badly done and looks sh*t !!
As far as I know, it was never a serious scrambler mod.
I agree with Baz ref styling on this bike, they’ve ignored / wasted an opportunity to style it inspired by past scrambler bikes and competition success. They cudda really leveraged this history with big black and white photos etc plastered all over the walls and website… like Triumph do so well.
