Anyone have pics of the safety spring installed ? I am looking to buy one but in studying the picture on Andover Norton’s site I can’t make sense of it.
It appears to go around the pedal shaft with the crook going around the pedal arm but where does the straight tang bear against so the pedal loads the spring instead of just rotating it ? What am I missing ?
Thanks - RT

Here you go RT , I would write instructions but ... after first attempt it hung on wall for a couple seasons until I was taking that side apart , installed it then , honestly could not provide coherent how to , hope photos help .... good luck

Thanks everyone - it appears as though I had the concept backwards. The straight tang leads forward and seats under the boss for the adjustable stop bolt and the crook goes around the web for the pivot - yes ??

My previous posting with pics on the safety spring Chinese puzzle arrangement:

You don’t fit it so much as just hang it around the pivot. It looks a bit naff, but if you disconnect the brake cable you will soon see that it prevents the lever from dropping any further. You will see that it’s quite obvious when you realise it isn’t meant to look pretty

It also has a side benefit of lifting the brake lever and helping to turn off the brake light switch. Before installing mine I was in the habit of lifting up the lever with my toe each time I used the brake to insure that the light went out.

I used the safety spring when I had standard footrests, I modified it to use it when I changed to commando specialties rear sets, and then I modified it again when I switched to Madass140's dunstall rear set copies.... A return spring on brake lever is a good thing if your brake cable breaks. It keeps the lever from pointing straight down and pole vaulting you off the bike on the next left turn.

‘I have a spring on my stock 1974 but not on my Combat with rear sets. The brake pedal on my rear sets isn’t long enough the hit the road. Am I missing something?

I don't know. When you ride, does your bike position occasionally look like this? If it does, I would bet if the brake cable snapped your pedal might catapult you, or at least put you on your ass...

safety spring came in the mail today - just installed. thanks for this thread - one less thing I have to worry about. as a temp fix, was using a big rubber band - the same rubber band I was using to keep my kick start pedal in place until I fixed that issue - :D

My spring came in handy a few years ago. The adjuster nut backed off and the brake cable yoke departed during a high speed run home on the QEW returning from the CVMG Rally in Paris. Didn't notice until stepping on the brake on the exit for home. The pedal could have dropped and catapulted me at speed if it wasn't for the spring.

and that is why i double nut the adjuster.

ditto on the double nut. the addition of the safety spring should be pretty much a no brainer addition. things like that have a habit of biting you in the arse when you least expect it - ;)
