I just had the front wheel relaced on my 71CDO and want to true the brake drum and arc the shoes in. I can get the wheel\drum assy in a conventional brake drum lathe, but I don't like the setup. If I use the conventional setup for car drums the clamps will mar the crap out of the aluminum, no way around it and still keep the drum clamped tight enough to get an even cut. If I use cones small enough to center the hub without doing damage it's not secure enough to get a true cut. My only other thought is to reinstall bearings and make an arbor so I can do it in a regular lathe if I can find one big swing over the ways. How has anyone else done this??
Thanks

I dont know , I m asking: does it matter if you do the drum cut in a lathe
before you lace or after the wheel is assembled and spokes in tension?

From all that I've read, spoke tension can distort a drum so it's better to do it after lacing.

I skim the hubs in an ordinary lathe with bearings fitted, at least then you know the drum is true to the axle.
they are a pretty solid hub, I think it would take some serious spoke tension to distort the hub,

You might try just arching the shoes first, it may be good enough. I didn't do anything to my drums and I don't notice any surging. Of course you know to tighten the brakes before the axles, then loosen to use.
