Taking my oil tank off my MkIII for repairs. Anyone know the size of the bolt for the bottom mount?

turns out to be a 7/16. What a pain to remove...

Actually that's the size of the spanner, the bolt size is 1/4" UNF

Yeah, I got rid of that nylock and put another nut on it as a lock nut. Or get yourself a nut driver. Actually it's better with 2 nuts, you can put the tank on without tension on the wings and use the 2nd nut to hold the reflector bracket on. I got anal and added an al-u-min-i-um plate across the 2 wings, just for added stability too.

Completely off topic but nevertheless constructive :)

I bet it's hard to get to. My tank was "repaired" by the PO and just brazed back up with no attachment point. I glued a piece of high density foam under the tank, and one on the back side. It's worked so far, keeps the tank from moving around and rubbing on metal.

To DogT's point, I think L.A.B. posted a reply to a thread on pulling the gas tank. I can't find the original, and I have only a few hundred working brain cells left, but I think he said he put wing nuts on the studs and drilled holes in the studs for spring clips. Fast and safe.

OK, point taken. He did whine about the removal though.

Oh, I missed that, sometimes I don't read things completely and assume things incorrectly. I'm completely off topic.

At least you were still talking about bikes.

This is why I really enjoy and appreciate this forum. All I needed was the wrench size to remove the bttom mount, and it went sideways from there. Not being sarcastic- spent more time on reading responses than it ultimately took to remove bolt.

Well, what KIND of wrench did you use?
As I recall, the tight space allows for only a small angle rotation using an open jaw 7/16" wrench.

Maybe a thin ratcheting head wrench would make it a much easier job?

It was a 7/16, and had about 1/2 inch of movement available. Had one hand reaching around to the bolt head from the front, wrench in other hand from the back. Moved wrench 1/2 inch, took wrench off head, used hand from front to hold wrench on bolt, move another 1/2 inch and repeat. I think I'm going to buy one of those ratchet wrenches to use when I put it back on...
