I picked up a 1973 R75/5 recently my first kraut bike. I'm in need of a head light trim ring. Bike has a windjammer on it that I plan on ditching when the HD light is working properly again.....Any help will be apprecated. I might have a norton part or two to trade ???

TIA,

yep,,,,,I've looked into a speedo repair already. OUCH,,,,,, :( There are a couple of other missing parts I need too but what I have looked into already the used parts are few & far between for mucho pecos. I didn't know I'd have to go back to work just to keep this bike on the road. :)

R75/5's are awesome bikes...I even had a Watsonian GP on mine back in the day.....
You can use a headlight assemble from an R65 ( same diameter)
My Commando has a Bosch headlight....I suspect its from an R65 as well.
Check out the airheads section of ADV rider, and Motobins in the UK for parts.

if you are not fussy about using a new headlight, almost any right diameter headlight from the car breakers will fit whether they are Lucas, CIBIE 7" with/without Sidelight if it’s what required, just make sure it has the correct l.h. or R.h. dip.
Also there must be a few Smiths chronometric speedos lying about for BMWs from ex-police bikes.

Re: BMW question,,,,,,,solved

Another point I learned about this head light is the trim ring just snaps on. There is no screw just a couple of spring clips. On another note I learned that a R65 ring is a good upgrade because it uses a screw clip to hold it on.
I was very fortunate a good friend came through for me with a NOS piece last night. This again cements the importance of belonging to a club of any sorts, ie. our norton club. Until next time.......... :D

The Backfires can be pretty vicious . :)

BMW question,,,,,,,

I mentioned I found a trim ring last month and the lens with the reflector came from a 1996 Trident I used to have. The triumph lens is a Hella brand,,,, go figure. I have a Bosch lens from the Candle Power Co. I had intended to use but it was too big. Now that issue has been solved I can fix up all the other little nicks. Like finding out how a side plate from the timing chain got into the oil pan along with a rubber o-ring. Then there is the stripped valve cover stud holes and the badly corroded pilot jet in one of the carbs that doesn't want to come out.........

I have never heard of the timing tensioner doing that. Depending on mileage may be time for a new chain, and maybe sprockets.
The rocker threads could be done in situ, 6mm for the small ones and 8mm for the centre. probably need to fab up a drill jig in wood to keep your drill straight, before helicoiling.
Ultrasonic cleaning is good for old carbs. Probably need a new diaphram too.
If over 50 000 mls new exhaust valves are recommended.
I ride one daily and race one too so know a bit about BMW's.
cheers
John
