Update on the blue saga:

An envelope arrived from Alaska this morning, with a superb colour chip from Russ's bike.

Here's the comparison with an original never-seen-much-sunlight NOS 'S' sidepanel bought new from RGM a few years back

And the inevitable comparison with my 850 MkIIA

I'll charge the batteries on my digital camera and try again later to see if there's a difference - these were taken on an iPhone camera.
I'll wait for natural daylight without the rain :|

Clearly how the colour is portrayed is mostly down to the camera/light balance or whatever.
Russ's colour chip is slightly yellowed compared to the 'S' sidepanel, but it looks a lot like the same colour of Fireflake Royal Blue to me, allowing for the degradation of the lacquer with daylight exposure.

Off to do a Golden Bronze Proddy Racer now - photos soon :)

That's not a bad match Andy.
The shot with you holding the chip up against the tank looks like a piece of cardboard with a hole in it, it is that close! Good stuff.

i painted these for murray at cyclecraft enginnering using house of kolor flakes, very close to the original fire flake blue, murray has some photos on face book if anyone is interested, cheers

Right under our noses all the time! All we had to do was sort through a few thousand paint chips to find it!

What is said to be a NOS Fireflake Blue Fastback tank on evilbay.
(why does it only have one gold decal on one side of it ?)

EDIT - this ebay link no longer goes where it did back then - beware.

But the picture is still valid.
