I had a bright blue 1974 850 Commando with taller than stock bars but not as high as the Hi-Rider bars back in the 70's and like an idiot sold it for $1300 and lately have been looking for it again but it went to Connecticut and hasn't been titled in the past 5 years. The DMV there purges everything older than that so my search came to a halt. I bought one the other day that has been restored and is immaculate but it's black. I would like to either trade someone for blue tins or find and OEM set I can repaint Blue. I have read a lot and still doesn't seem like anyone really knows for sure the color code of the 1974 blue ( Pacific, Royal, or whatever people call it) commando. I also take it that 1974 is different from the earlier bowling ball blue color? I have found a tank and side covers from a 1972 that are supposed to be original and perfect shape for $550 dollars that I could repaint. From what I read, this would be much better than an aftermarket tank? What are your thoughts? I also bought in the deal a 1967 BSA Thunderbolt partially restored that I plan on selling.

Don't you already have an OEM tank and side covers? If the 1972 tank is fiberglass I'd stay away from it. Plenty of forum users have had misadventures with ethanol and fiberglass.

Just repaint them the color you want.

Indeed.

This subject has been thrashed about here 4 or 5 times now.
If there is any obvious difference between 1973 or 1974 blue and earlier blues, it has yet to be positively pointed out that there is any difference. !
The 1971 color chart shown in those threads would seem just as suitable to try to match the blue color with.
And you see a wide range of blues on Nortons out there in the real world....
