Blue Headers

I see that many Commandos have some blueing on the headers, and then again, some have none at all. My headers have significant bluing at the first curve, and I don't know if this is an indication of a mixture too rich, or too lean. I checked my engine timing with a strobe and digital tach, and it is spot on 31 deg at 5000 rpm, as per spec on the installed Boyer MK 111 analog. My sparkplugs are usually dark colored, but have never fouled on me...I am using NGK BP7ES
plugs.
Any ideas?

You ride it too much  , if you want unblued pipes keep it in the garage or get double walled pipes made

I have found that using metal polish on the pipes, they blue up more than using wax polish.

Its mostly expected out to the max of the bend by nice throttled riding.
Generally lean-ness or off timing can both increase exhaust temp.

Beware the rub it off stuff like Blue Job, gets the blue out
BUT, dulls the finish. To me shiny blue is better than dulled chrome.

There are way to coat inside so harder to get to outside,
paint or grease carbonized to ceramic, but once pipe
used, only crude layers stick any.

Oh, yeah 31' full advance my still be too adv, for the
fast burn Norton chambers.

Forget about it; it's more related to the pipe construction/chromeing than anything else.

I can live with the blue headers, but was just wondering how some single-walled headers stay clean.

Hobot...you say 31 deg at 5000 rpm may be too advanced, yet that is the standard setup for timing for the Boyer analog. What would you recommend?

Anyone else think the timing should be retarded a little from 31 deg?

A lot depends on what quality of fuel you use. Low RON, high E are bad for a long advance, I can feel it on my stock 850. Put the good stuff in and its much nicer to thrash. Personally, I'd experiment with a bit more retard from 31 just to see how it goes with your regular fuel. I'm sticking with 28 advance, my normal touring ride is between 3,500 and 4,500RPM.

Ditto, what Mick said, plus the day's weather and attitude visited.
Kinda late to monitor pipes now unless just beginning to blue.

W/o Exh Temp metering its by guess and by golly. Plug chops
don't reveal as much as prior to new lean gasoline and really
requires peeking into or cutting open to see base of porcelain.

So , as mentioned - tune may be on mark but pipes inferior grade?

Commandos hail from a seafaring sailing people so its got the
inborn innate need for constant tweaking of lines and sails set,
each craft with it own quirks.

Me, I just keep advancing till I'm injured kick starting
then retard till I'm not Boyers or points, so end up with 28' total
on Hi CR faster burn Combats.

I used the blue away stuff, it worked well... I instantly regretted it. I found out too late that I actually liked the blue. Now I have right starting to blue and left starting to yellow :|

Capt. B, I had identical reaction to some success to remove blue.
I tired to polish back some shine but only partial success.

Ms Peels pipes have turned bright red in a few seconds
with upgrade Boyer terminals I installed with extra nut
behind plate to get snagged in rotation, plus they've
been welded to make a 2-1 and dropped and rained
on so only thing to cover the ugly is insulation wrap
and MX pipe armor.

Don't order a ceramic Al coat outside - as its as shiny
smooth as seasoned folding lawn chain tube.

Bikes w/o some bluing are double walled or not
throttled much.

Yep, I done cleaned off the blue with Blue Job a couple of times...should have left the pipes alone. But they re-blued nicely. At least headers are not that expensive if they need replacing. Yesterday I retarded the timing a couple of degrees, so will see how performance is effected. Should be just fine, and at WOT at least the pistons have less chance of getting holed
