I don't think anyone has found this one in my other thread. But I know you guys want to see the carnage...

So, what's the scenario here?
* Big end seizes
* Rod bends and breaks
* Cap bolts fail
* Loose junk + rotating crank ventilates case
Is that how you believe it happened?

Hi Dave,

Wow, what a mess. I noticed you have a MK3 timing cover. Did you have the oil wet sumping drain spring/ valve in that Mk3 timing cover? I wonder if that got stuck or something.

I am looking forward to the going back together movie.

Cheers

Thanks for posting that, and yes I'm staying tuned :) didn't I read that you're getting the barrels sleeved and the cases repaired. Exciting options for a rebuild await, right. CNW waisted bolts, JS light weight slugs etc... etc.... etc ;)

how far does the crack propagate through the barrel. will you be able to save it and resleeve?

Pretty sure the big end cap exited out the bottom at great speed.

No, it was the oil pump seal that fell out when I was refitting the timing cover.

The MkIII cover never seemed to make much of a difference with wetsumping. Not sure why.

A sad scenario but weirdly entertaining and educational at the same time.

I have a Mk III cover on my bike as well and it doesn’t stop wet sumping either. The non return seems to be good at sticking open after not many uses.

I'm thinking of going back the original cover at this point although the cam chain inspection port is nice.

That is a tough pill to chew on.:mad: There is good value in an oil pressure gauge. I use mine
#1 to see that I got oil pressure when start up and #2 for trending. I also know when my bike is running hot. Watching your other thread I see you got Don's oil pressure gauge kit so it doesn't happen again. Good move. Maybe a thread to show how you wire that up to your bike is in order.:D
Cheers,
Thomas

I have a while before I get to that part.

Mk3 anti drain valve will stay open when you stop. If you are leaving the bike for a period, switch off, select first nudge bike backwards, select neutral and put bike on stand - the valve will now be shut.

3 years, oh no, how did that sneak by? I would have guessed this happened about 1 year ago. ( Checks his pulse to make sure he's still alive)

No doubt you already know this but the seal that fell off ,
it was the correct MK3 seal? IE the flat seal and not the conical one that previous models had?
