Depends what ones reference point is , all I am saying is that there will be a difference in readings , and that oil pressure will be inexplicably higher , whether or not a rider would notice is a slightly different issue. Having put a rod through cases at 80mph many years ago , perhaps I am wary, but on UK roads with current traffic density you will need a lot of space to control the slide you get from blowing a motor up at say 6,000 rpm in 2nd . Space you will not have.

Sheer skill will see me through.

You do not know what is in a sludge trap until you have looked in it

You’re right of course, but I think TTs point is that it takes a LONG time for a crank to block through sludge. And the kind of person we are talking about here would have caught and cleaned such a crank, through the course of timely maintenance, before it got so bad.

Nice chit chat guys, but I was wonering if the OP had sobered up enough after the recommended Vodka break to investigate/decision make any further.

Whilst I applaud the light hearted, in truth we are looking at £3K to £5K minimum in new or used (or a mix of) parts to find a lasting solution here.

I'd like to know if the oil pump rubber seal was installed properly.
The manual oil line valve concept worries me as well.

I skipped the Vodka, more of a beer and whisky man, and yes i've drowned my sorrows fairly well.
Ive done nothing further, well actually thats a small lie, today i swapped it with my 66' tiger 100 thats been in storage.
im trying to buy a house, so this will probably end up on the back burner for now.
Either that or the curiosity will eventually get the better of me and ill strip it down, but for now the sun is shinning and its far too hot to play in the shed.

3-5k sounds about right to sort this and thats a whole lot of cash at the moment, my heart tells me to keep it but my heads telling me to cut my losses, time will tell i suppose

On a happier note tomorrow i plan to get out on something a bit different.

oh theres plenty room, just didn't fit one, no wet sumping issues,(i should note here im not sure if there were any in the commando)

its probably my favourite bike bar the commando, id have another in a heartbeat

Well watch ebay for some cases - and ask the seller for the serial number . You need it to identify . If sellar is reluctant move on they could be stolen.

ive been watching cases, i think my money would be better spent with Steve Maney, at least for 850 (theres plenty 750 stuff)
if i keep it theres plenty time to source stuff and an add in the wanted section will appear. ive been told of somebody local who might be able to weld it, but a strip and inspect is needed first

That 'looks to be a fairly straight forward repair (as a welder) and you get to retain the engine number over a replacement case.
Once stripped, cleaned and assessed I am sure it (although regrettable) doesn't have to be a rebuild costing a arm and leg.

Marlin make some nice gauges for peace of mind once it is ready to fire up again.

Adam, exercise extreme caution when thinking about Maney cases.

Firstly, stock stuff is perfectly strong enough for most of us most of the time.

Secondly, they’re not related to your current failure mode; if you’d bought Maney cases last time... they would now have a big hole in them too!

But my main warning is thus:

If you have them, you really should have a Maney crank to go in ‘em.

If you have that, posh rods seem a no brainier.

Then come the Maney barrels and forged pistons and...

Before you know it, your £3-5k has become £8-10k.

Do not ask me how I know this...

My thought process on this was if the cases could not be repaired, and looking at the pictures more i believe they can.
ive looked at the price of 750 stuff and its quite a bit cheaper. New cases were coming in at around the same price hence the thinking.
i know what you mean about the snowballing effect (i've seen your threads about Maney stuff)

If you chose Maney cases you would need him to machine off the best part to fit the primary case!

I run Maney for race use, crank and cases, I would not use anything else this side of a lottery win! (but I did buy the set before I retired!). But for a road bike, if I could not do something with original parts I would happily use AN cases with less extra cost and work.

With the crank I would be perfectly happy to put a Maney crank in used or AN cases. Like others I am suspicious of 40 year old cranks, but magnafluxing should give you an indication of risk.

If you do decide to go Maney, don't wait too long, as we have seen he is winding down, on a when they are gone they are gone basis.
