Problem with bike going up hill now solved. I remembered some advice from previous posts along the lines of "what did you touch last before the problem happened" great advice for all those who struggle to understand these beasts at times. Initial problem of kickback prompted me to replace plugs as part of the fix(which was actually a loose ground wire) so after spending hours with the fuel side of things i put the old plugs back in and she went up the mountain like a rocket. The old plugs i am using are NKG BPRE-S and i replaced them without cross referencing (it was a Sunday and the local garage was the only place open) with Champion N21 which look the same but obviously not the same rating or whatever spark plugs go by so i can only assume that they were overheating and shutting down under the extra load . Hopefully there will be a few weeks between problems to give you guys a rest from my weird issues. Thanks for the assistance

I think that you've had a lucky escape if your pistons are still intact. The N21 seems to be equivalent to an NGK 4 and generally sold by tractor dealers. I know that Commandos are agricultural, but... :)

How could damage be caused to the pistons apart from the obvious if the plugs were the wrong length?

Pre detonation would be timing related most certainly you could burn the plugs out or maybe in your case wouldn't burn the fuel properly and lose of power. If the plugs were too long its possible that the piston when at the top of the stroke could come in contact with the plugs that would be bad. Engine could run hot could run cold you could also screw up your coils so I think if you have no damage you got off lucky. just my opinion ...Doxford
