Mine has been invaluable in the shop, and got a LOT of use in the pits when I was racing. I just left them "parked" by my fire extinguisher, just in the lane, for anyone to use that wanted to. I had a lot of "takers".

with a little ingenuity, I think it wouldn't be too tough to build a "cordless" rolling starter.

Starting to get a little annoyed. Doc Z cashed my check a week ago and I still don't have the starter or a tracking number. I've called and left him 2 voice messages a few days ago and he hasn't called me back.

Don't sweat it. He normally moves somewhat slowly, except on the race track.

He's a stand-up guy, he'll come through.

Thanks Grandpaul, I guess I'll have to be impatiently patient.

I bought a roller starter a while back. It takes 240 volts AC mains electricity to run it, which is OK at most race circuits these days. It is based on a large angle grinder in an aluminium case with a handle and the ramp folds up to become the lid. It has a switch on a lead, so you can sit on the bike and operate it with your foot. If you overload it by trying to start in a gear which is too high, the safety switch will trip. It cost $750 from Bruce Kinnersley in Geelong, Victoria.

Well, it's been another week and still no roller starter.... no tracking details either.

I have owned a single motor Doctor Z for about 10 years. I normally used it to start my Yamaha TD-3 race bike which is a 250 cc two stroke, a GP production racer, at the track. Works great. I have used it with my Norton and the compression is a little too high so you have to bounce on the bike to get any traction. Don't think the adding the second motor would help much. Probably putting a passenger on the bike would be better.

Have you called to check what's up?

I heard from DocZ 2 weeks ago via email that he was going to send it out. A week passed and I didn't receive anything. I called him repeatedly and he never called me back. He finally answered on Sunday and said that he was sorry and the he'd have it shipped to me by Tuesday, 5/1 7. Hopefully it gets here soon. He said he'd email me the tracking number but I still haven't gotten one.

Sorry to hear of your problems with your Doc Z purchase. I wish I had read your posts earlier.

I just listed the fact that I make and sell roller starters under the 'For Sale' forum.

My name is Blake Perry and I am located in Houston Texas. These units are called 'Perry Roller Starters.'
If anyone is interested, they can go to my web page and see pics and a full description of what I build.
Much less expensive than a Doc Z. And much lighter too, weighing only 45 lbs.
I also ship the same day I receive payment using UPS Ground with a tracking number.
The web page lists my contact info as well as the price.

Time to pursue your remedies via credit card company / paypal / bank.

Thanks guys. I did finally manage to get DocZ on the phone. He said that he had health issues and apologized for the delay. It took about a month from the time I paid to the time I got it and I now have no time to assemble it so I will report back later with a review. It looks like it should do the job nicely.

It's a shame that DocZ doesn't have a better way to purchase his stuff. If you pay via Credit Card he adds a surcharge of 3-4%. He really needs to update his old website allowing people to purchase online... Or simply use eBay. He stil uses an old EarthLink.com email address that has spam filters set so high that you can't even communicate via email.

Well, good news at the end.

Assembly took me the better part of 2 hours after I got the starters and cables (about 2 hours chasing around town).

I used AutoZone lifetime warranty starters, will never have to pay for replacements.

In fact, I may still have a spare pair!

Honestly, I haven't really pulled out everything from the boxes but I know mine came with two ford starter motors. I was assuming that the cables were in there too...but I don't know.

Not sure what you paid for as far as a Bill Of Materials, I traded an Aermacchi knucklehead engine for mine without motors or cables.

I'm going to try to set aside some time tonight to put it together. I will let you know what I find. I hope it's all there. It wasn't cheap. I think it was $850+ with shipping.

Well I managed to get some time this evening to put the roller starter together. It didn't include the solenoid or cables as we suspected so I didn't finish building it. It was also missing several pieces of hardware, nuts, washers, lock collars...it's even missing the carrying handle. I'm not exactly pleased with the fact the parts are missing and the two starter motors that were included were banged up too.

I called Art Zimmerman and left a message but if his past history of slow/poor communications is anything to go on, I might as well go to the hardware store and find the pieces myself. Not a happy camper.
