Building a 74 Commando 850 motor, new pistons and rings, 060 over. Checking around for advise on best oil to use for the breakin.
Tried several alturnatives in the past and would like to hear what others feel has worked the best for them.
Thank You.

I use any good dino 20W50 with a few drops of ZDDP added for the tappets (same stuff I use everyday). I may have used the Advance Auto "house" brand oil last time because it was cheaper (you could use synthetic but it seems a waste of money). Then I take it out and spank it hard for 15-20 miles. I dump the oil at around 60-70 miles, preferably on the same day while hot because I envision all those little bits of cylinder wall material that get shaved off during the ring seating process and end-up floating around in the engine. Hopefully the filter catches them. However I have no scientific evidence to back any of this up.

Never use synthetic for bedding in, its too slippy and the rings will not bed in, use it and you will need to fit new rings and rehone to get it to bed in properly.

Cheap dino 20/50 with good levels of ZDDP either in the oil or added.

This will probably start something, sorry, but I have heard over and over again do not use syn at break- in. It's almost common knowledge. Thing is, like many others, I'm betting, I have only heard "don't use syn at break-in" from people who have heard it from people, who have heard it from people, who have heard it from people, etc. etc. Just for shits and giggles, I'd like to hear from an expert, that is, some one who REALLY knows one way or the other. I don't consider an engine builder necessarily an expert unless that builder has first hand knowledge from a lubrication engineer. Other wise they are just like us,,, heard it from someone who heard it from someone...
New Triumphs are factory filled with syn.

New Triumph s are a completely different animal to an old Norton, the ring materials and all the machining tolerances and surface finishes are effectively already run in, so you can use synthetic oil from the start. But the statement still stands for any old engine with Norton tolerances.

And you know this because??

Modern cars and bikes - with comparatively tiny tolerances - are using synthetic oil from brand new these days.
Orginal factory fill.

Don't you just love cnc machining, that can make every part about as identical as can be.....
