Beginner question on nuts

I got a new bolt and nut set for my crankshaft. The larger nuts are not threaded all the way through. Was I correct in screwing in the fully threaded end first.

On the second pic of 2 smaller nuts, does it matter which way round they go - one end is completely flat, the other ridged?

Found the answer to first question - they are simply longer to allow spanner to fit, so non-threaded part to outside.

I guess that's a hint saying "start at the smooth side...". Never noticed it was quite so ragged.
