So this is what I decided to do. I put a tether on my side panel made from 150-pound mono fishing line. It is long enough to lay the panel on the seat but short enough that it wont hit the ground if dropped.

The tether easily lays in the tray when the panel is fitted to the bike.

If that sidecover ever comes off while you're on the road, you may end up wishing you didn't have it tethered to the bike. If it comes loose at freeway speeds, I can easily imagine it flying around on the tether like some sort of ancient Shaolin weapon, and possibly (likely) finding it's way into the rear wheel spokes. With enough bad luck involved, it looks like it could be ingested by the bike between the wheel and fender.

I think you're tempting Murphy's law with that modification.

Something like a heavy metal paper clip -- the black kind with two handles for leverage -- clipped to the inside of the tool tray, with a short tether, might be more safe.

Anybody got a wind tunnel handy? This is not without merit. If you attempt this procedure, take into account all aspects of risk associated with your machine and riding habits before proceeding!

I think I'll stick with the fix I came up with. Check it before I ride and several times during each ride. The only times it has come loose is after I had been messing with it to start with. Pretty easy to do and no work involved. Having spent some time in the past on the Pulaski Skyway (grew up in North Jersey) I know I wouldn't want that to happen on that road. I'm not so sure I'd want to ride the bike on the Skyway but it does get you from Manhattan to the turnpike.

Just ride the bike and don't worry about it. If you loose it you replace it. :)

Except that, until recently, new sidecovers have been almost impossible to source.
Unless folks have a secret stash somewhere ?

I've been enquiring about getting a spare to be able to match an original black and gold roadster sidecover, for years, and finally someone has had some more made up - last time I enquired they were out of stock, again.

When you consider there are 750 AND 850 ones, and Roadster AND Interstate ones, AND Mk1 and Mk1A type, AND Mk 3 types, its a jungle out there....
