Dzus fastener

'69 & '70 'S' & Roadster with the ham can oil tank had a captive metal Dzus fastener (06-2489) attached to the frame with a circlip, holding the RH panel via a bracket riveted on the front of the panel.

From '71 this moved to the LHS with the introduction of the RHS oil tank, and remained until the 'A' model 850 & MkIII, as already covered by LAB.
The early Fastback used a plastic Rotolock screw for the LH panel, which was similar-ish to the half-turn plastic screw (06-6435) on the 'A' and Mk 3 models, which is described as a 'fastener' in the parts book, and strictly speaking not a Dzus fastener.

I tried to get a new fastener for my 76? Mk3 "battery cover" side. The twist metal one. It's not shown on any exploded diagram for a mk3 I've found. It,s 06 2489 it now seems after reading this. Why ? Roy.

The correct Mk3 Dzus parts are 06.6307* and 06.6435 not 06.2489 which was not used on the Mk3 and that's why you can't find it.
If you have a side panel with that type of fastener then it's not original (presumably because the original black plastic airbox has been removed as the Dzus bracket is attached to the airbox?).
Dzus fastener

*(Andover Norton shows the correct receptacle but the part number is 06.4066 according to the Mk3 parts book, 06.6307 is the Mk1A/2A type but it could be the parts book number that's wrong).

Someone has done a precise job on this one. Seems then that the fastener on mine is from a 70 roadster ? Fooled me as it all looks factory designed and manufactured. Is this bracket off another commando ? Roy.

That fastener lasted until the 850 Mk2. The bracket is available now as a separate part.

Is this bracket off another commando ?

I can't tell from the pictures if it's a modified Mk3 panel or an earlier panel. An original Mk3 panel would have one hole in the top (for the Dzus), one at the rear (for the pin) and a lug at the bottom for the rubber grommet (same as the oil tank panel).

Seems the whole setup , sidepanel, bracket and rear mountings are off a 71 750 roadster. Perfect fit even the back mountings ? The frames must have been identical in this area but that seems slightly unlikely ? My sidepanel is almost certainly 06-1687/1. Roy.

In that case it would have two support bracket holes and grommets at the rear (as your later picture shows two brackets). The Mk3 panel only has one.

Yes , that's the top one . The bottom one is the same but longer by quite a bit. Looks factory part ? Strange indeed. Roy.

Not sure if your'e aware, but the rubbers on the spikes in your photos should be inserted into the rear of the side cover. That is how it is located.
I have found a little lubricant on the spikes makes it easier the install/remove the side cover.

Would that not leave no rubber "washer" between the cover and metal bracket ? The way it is is similar to isolastic? No ? Ps I use red rubber grease on the rubber "top hats" . Locates smoothly, Roy.

It's the fibreglass grommets and panels that I have. See what difference it would make. Mine seems right for its fitment however It's not the correct side cover or fitment. Ps, It had twin amals whenI got it. I just took out the airbox etc. Sidepanel is as was. Factory using up leftovers ? It's been known. Roy. It fits and looks perfectly.

No, I don't think so. It is more likely to have been a previous owner's modification.
Look for the bracket or rivet holes in the old airbox if you still have it.

Is it a steel panel you have? Roy.

The original Mk3 oil tank panel would also have been steel although the current production from Andover Norton are fibreglass.
