I am in need of a new battery for my '74 850 Interstate and would like to get an Odyssey battery. Anyone know which one is correct? The Odyssey application chart does not include Norton.

I am running a ytx12bs battery in my mk2a with oe plastic airbox, the advantage for me is that the ytx series of batteries are sealed led acid and do not require a vent hose i.e no acid venting over frame or pipes.

I have used Odyssey batteries but on My Moto Guzzi you need to make sure that you get a battery charger that is suitable. A fully discharged Odyssey battery can not be re-charged with many of the common battery maintenance chargers.

I started using UPS (Uninteruptible Power Supply, the big box your Confuser is plugged into at work) batteries several years ago, they are small, cheap and don't have to be vented (AGM) so there are no stains or runs of "battery spooge" (plus they can be put anywhere!).

I think the only Odyssey battery that will physically fit into the battery compartment of a '74 model, without the need for modifications, is the PC310.

I fitted PC545 but my battery competment is pretty clear of any bits and pieces. I think from memory the PC 545 comes in a metal holder which is useful to use. (Better check the website in case my memory is not 100%)Just checked PC545 MJ (MJ is for Metal Jacket)

Yes, it's possible, but I'm fairly sure some mods would be needed to get a PC545 in there (with the standard airbox?). Even the 850 MkIII which takes a bigger battery as standard, the PC545 has to be stood on end to get it in.

I've never really seen the need to use the metal jacket (MJ) PC545, and I don't think it's entirely necessary to fit such a large battery to a non-electric start model in any case, unless perhaps a total-loss ignition system was being used? Personally, I think a PC310 would be more than adequate? After all, the Odyssey fiment guide lists the PC310 as being suitable for certain bikes right up to a Z1000?

Hi I fitted a PC545 only the once when my Commando's own battery was knackered here is a picture. In terms of size considering the low output of a Commando alternator and if you do a lot of low speed in town driving fitting a large capacity gives you a bit of a safety net.Picture quality a bit rough an in midst of a tidy up having moved the horn into the battery area. I do not have experience of the srtandard airbox so a L.A.B says this may be an issue.

Thanks for the input, I ordered the 310.

Your choice but the Commando as standard came with a 10 Ah Battery you are replacing it with a 7 Ah.Also technically voiding the warranty :-)

Although the battery rating given in the manual is for "10 AH", the original battery types were NV 063244, Lucas PUZ5A, or Yuasa 12N9-4B.

The 12N9-4B(-1) is 9AH (10 hour rate) according to Yuasa's own technical specifications, and I doubt the PUZ5A's AH rating was any higher? As the charging rate specified in the Lucas service manual for the PUZ5A was 0.8A? And a battery's charge rating is normally one tenth of its amp hour rating (the Yuasa charge rating specified for the 9AH 12N9-4B is 0.9A) and, according to the Odyssey PC310 tech. details it is 8AH not 7AH, so I doubt there will be any lack of battery power?

Hi the link given does not specify the discharge rate 20 or 10.
The 10 hour rates for the batteries are YUASA 9 Ah and for the 310 it is 7 Ah. the Odyssety require a minimum of 0.4C10 charge rate when deeply discharged. This for the 310 is roughly 2.8 A so most cheap smart chargers will not do it Ultimate Chargers have a max output of 0.8 A. YUASA recommend choosing a battery on the 10 hr rate.I fit a large battery because if I breakdown in the back of beyond I like the opportunity to get the bike up and running so if this happens at night I can run an inspection lamp for a reasonable length of time and to keep morale up I can also make a cup of tea :-) and use a soldering iron.IMHO

Jean,

That looks like exactly what I'm looking for. Have you had any experience with it?

No, but the guys on the distribution list (where I got this from) say it works very well. They could start a bike with the electric starter and run a race and this is on a total loss system (no alternator). The only thing you have to be careful about, amd this holds true for many batteries, is to not let it drain down to 0.
