Suggestions for MKIII battery? I know this has been discussed but not for several years it looks like and new developments are likely. Thanks.

Mk 111 .
I used the Odyssey PC 625 for years as recommended by this forum .
But it's too big and heavy for me and I don't need it to move ( crank over ) the superior D.D. starter motor .
Recently went to a smaller , lighter battery from Canadian tire Banking corp . Works just the same , costs less , more room for electronic after-bits now and relays . Eliminator 14 A.
You live in U.S.A. so if no Cdn. tire nearby look around . $10 rebate on trade in . Protect the environment for future humanoids and other life forms . Lead is bad , ask the Romans . Enjoy .

Yuasa YTX14-BS or similar. Just over £30 on ebay. Check what orientation the terminals are to make it easier to fit. Live in the modern age and whatever make of battery you buy make it an AGM one (sealed)

I agree with using AGM-type batteries, Peter. Free-acid batteries are a nasty mess waiting to happen.
Unfortunately, I can't find any for £30-ish.
Maybe the last one you bought has lasted a long time.....😄

Allan.

I've been using a Shorai 18AH in my Commando since I installed the Alton E-start in 2012. Works great with the Alton though don't know the power draw of the OEM starter vs the Alton. But I was so impressed with the Shorai that it's now the only battery I use on our other bikes - BMW R1200RS, BMW R9T, Honda Africa Twin, Ducati Diavel.

Magnasport YTX14AHL -BS ( 12V12Ah 210 CCA ) from Magnacharge .. This battery is 6 years old and my second in the last 14 years . It stays in the bike all year and once a month during the winter i put it on my Genius G1100 charger just to keep it happy . Also using the Dyno Dave starter , as fast as you push in on the starter switch you can let go and the bike is running .

Keep in mind that no matter what battery you use , it will only be a good battery if the rest of the bike is set up correctly .

YTX20CH BS is about the biggest you can fit in a std Mk3, I have a Yuasa YTX16BS [which is the same dimensions] in mine at the moment as there were no Yuasa YTX20CH BS in stock in NZ when I was purchasing.

Thank you for the feedback and advice. Is Li-ion feasible? I know there are implications with the electrical system, but clearly I don't know much about that.

Is this a lithium battery?

I use a very small 12 volt lead-acid battery to run a Boyer ignition total loss. It works well for about 4 sessions on a race circuit over two days. Then I am left with a battery which I must keep trickle charging. I have looked for a similar size and voltage lithium battery. The only ones I can find are for video cameras. Their terminals and chargers are very different. Do lithium batteries lose charge while standing and if they do lose charge, can they be successfully re-charged without a 'memory effect' ?
