Hello everyone just stummbled upon this site and joined.....

I've just purchased a 73 mkv commando after an abscence of 22 years of owning Nortons, last one was a 73 interstate......

I've always been into triumphs so not a greatknowledge on Nortons....

wondered if any member could confirm if my bike should have black barrells or silver? (currently silver)

If I can work out how to upload a pic I'd be happy with your comments as intend to use the bike reguarly :D

Welcome 73mkv,

I have two MkV's myself, one rescued from the previous owners idea of a chopper (now torn down and stashed for a future re-incarnation) and one that I bought new in May '73. My MkV has suffered thru my early twenties and currently has about 45K miles. It probably gets less than 1K a year now, but it would be the last bike I would part with.

And it STOPS TOO. Very nice looking ride. Thanks for getting the picture up. Welcome on board.

YEAH!

Classy looking Roadster, and I'll bet the front disc actually stops the bike!

Very nice ride.

But it looks from the picture to have the breathing of a 72, or is it just the picture?

Although the MkV cases were improved, they retained the rear breather (and lack of sump strainer). The silver cylinder looks correct.

If you're after absolute originality on finish, the paint lining looks to be a slight adaptation of the 850 scheme. Black was the only 750 Roadster colour to receive lining but it was simply a broad 'D' and the side covers were un-lined.

Thank you all for your replies........ 79x100 would I be right in thinking the D type lining on the the tank was the same as the 72 Combat model?

many thanks :D

Well it's official I've become Nortonafied :D

I've decided to clear the garage of my unwanted clutter and put some bits on E-Bay feel free to check them out

I feel all the better for it

Can anyone reccomend a good body shop to get my tank and side panels done in the U.K.?

As I would like her to look the part

Cheers

Jon

73mkv, I had my tank and side panels painted at Faircharm restorations, who are located in Leicester, so not far from you. I think that the cost was about £350:00.

They did a very nice job, and I am 99% happy. Unfortunately I am a perfectionist (read pain in the a*se) If I were going to level any criticism, there was very very slight "squaring"of the semi circle of the gold pinstriping on the left hand side of the tank, but I am being hypercritical.

I know that this reads like an oxymoron, but despite my miniscule criticism, I would still recommend them.

If you want to, PM me and I'll email you some photos.

Great looking bike and what would i do with all that stoppping power. Your bike makes me want to start looking at brake conversions. My 71 roadster will have to stay as is for now. Don't change the look of the bike! Cylindere should be silver on your 73 but i have always liked the look of black.

My 73 850 (per serial number, one of the first 500 of the 850s) has black barrels....FWIW.

Well just got some side panel decals and tank decals from Andover Norton, So looks like the petrol tank and side panels will be going for a respray at some point..... Most likely Faircharm restorations (thanks for the pics Reggie)..... I have 1 question for all you experts, the parts book shows a reserve decal for the right hand side of the tank does anyone have a pic of where it should be situated on the tank???

Many thanks and a belated happy new year :D

I don't have a pic, but it should be near the bottom edge of the tank maybe 1/2 inch up from the edge or just above the lip on a metal tank, right over where the reserve tap is.
