Back guard

Thanx for the help on the elctric component mounting. Now what gives with the rear guard mounting, at the bottom of the guard. Does this mount off the two horn mount bolts from the battery craddle thru some spacers. The parts book I have does not make the arrangment too clear.

Took a look...from front to back of the bike....


2 bolts, heads to front of bike
angle iron on the bottom of the bat box
2 triangular horn mounting plates, single hole pointing down
2 spacers
2 large washers?(my suggestion)
fender
2 large washers(my suggestion)
nuts with loctite....

Note: Mine ripped holes in the fender about a year after it was new...I had to pop rivet pieces of sheet metal inside and outside of the fender to give me usable holes in the fender again, to bolt it tight. Suggestion: if your fender and holes are still in good shape, do yourself a favor and use nice large washers when you place the nuts on those bolts so they can't rip out of the thin stainless steel fender and ruin the fender... :wink:

PS...simular arrangement on the mounting plate above, that mounts on the frame plate, below the main tube....

Thanx for the conformation, I sort of asumed this is the way Norton assembled the guard. But geez talk about "heath robertson"
And I will certainly take onboard your spacer/washer suggestions.
I can imagine the stainless guard would be less than happy, as it does not mate up all that square to the battery box tab, come horn mount. I will craft up some top hat spacers that allow a gentle transition between the guard.

rear fender mounting

There are three holes at the front of the rear fender. The lower two are as hewho said, attached to the two horn mounting bolts. There is also an upper fender bracket (p/n 062169) that has two bolts and spacers attaching it to the frame on one end and one bolt through the fender at the lower end. At the rear of the fender is the "U" clamp around the frame tube.

I am rebuilding a 73 750 with help from Richard as he rebuilds his 850. There are spacers between the frame and rear fender bracket but the parts book does not show any spacers where the triangular horn bracket mounts to the rear guard. When fitting up it certainly looks as though there should be spacers. Is this correct ?

What the parts list would seem to show are two pairs of nuts and not two nuts and two spacers.

One pair of ordinary nuts that clamp the horn assembly to the battery tray part 140301 x2 (shown with the horn assembly in '73 parts book) and another pair of (self locking?) nuts 141201 x2 that secures the mudguard/fender (shown with rear guard/fender illustration).

Previous parts lists show both pairs of nuts together with the horn assembly which is less confusing.

That setup would also seem more logical as the bolts are then locked up by the first two nuts, so the second two nuts that secure the mudguard/fender can be tightened or slackened without the bolts turning, and I just checked my own (850 MK3) and that seems to be what is there.
