AVON ROAD RIDER TYRES ON COMMANDO

Hi all,
Ive just fitted a pair of Avon Road Rider Tyres to my 750 Interstate.
WOWWWWW, what a difference over the TT100's ive been using since the bike was new in 73 (not the same pair I hasten to add).
Ive fitted 100/90 x 19" Front & Rear. No more wobbling over white lines & road ruts, smoother around bends & a lot more stable at hi & low speed. I did not notice any slipping round bends with the Road Riders as ive experienced with the TT100's but they may have gone a bit hard with age anyway.
I had a great 185 mile ride out with the lads from Yorkshire branch of NOC to the coast on sunday & it handled like a dream.
70-80mph round bends & no struggling to get it to lean into the bend. It just felt so much more stable, almost like a modern bike.
Sorry to go on so much but I realy wish I had used something like these years ago. I paid £144 including tax for fitting to loose wheels, balancing, new tubes & Rim tapes. I got them from Woosters Motorcycles in Leeds but Wildes in Leeds do them mail order for £133 excluding fitting & balancing & their web site is easier to follow.
I'm looking forward to riding to Hunstanton (UK) for Norton Day this year in August.

I have been using them on my Commando for the last year and as you say they are superb, they give lots of confidence. They are much more stable and turn in quicker than TT100, I have also used Roadrunners which were good but not as stable over lines etc. :D
 
I had TT100's on my Norton when I got it in 84, changed to Avons very shortly after and would never go back, never felt safe on the TT's. The latest Roadriders improve even more.

Mine has a new pair of TT100s, and they grip just fine - I have Road Riders on my T140 and I wouldn't say they're any worse/different.
The TT100s do seem to be a very soft compound, and I'll be interested to see how long they hold out.

I haven't had any issues with white lining either, but they are new - I remember old ones (and Roadrunners, for that matter) being quite nasty in this respect.

Time will tell!
 
How is the rear tire wear vs the front tire wear? My TT100s are 3 or 4 changes in the rear to 1 in the front. I would love to find a rear tire that didn't wear so fast in the center.

Maybe 3 to 1 and the rear will still wear in the center leaving lots of tread on the edges. I got around 4,000 miles on the rear. Just put on new AM26 100/90-19 front and rear. Prior I had a 90/90-19 front - prefer the larger tire up there.

Do you by chance have a picture of these tires? I'd like to see what they look like or possible a link to a picture of them? I'm in the market for new tires and not sure what to get. I think the bike has dunlops on it right now.

I think you can find better prices.
 
Great tire and priced right! But I would recommend running 40lbs air pressure. I only got 3K out of rear with 30lbs! Front seems to last through 2 rears no problem!

How do you figure more pressure is going to fix the fact the tyre needs to go onto a wider rim,AVON only recomended 32psi on an interstate.They could really do with being a dual compound.
 
True the Bridgestone Battlax has the dual compound and has a great predictable feel in corners, Bob must be a lead foot, Wait that must be a lead wrist. That don't sound right. lol. :wink:
 
I put the TT100s on my bike when I first assembled it, as that was what was on the wheels when I got the bike (front tire was stamped made in Northern Ireland).

When my front finally wears out, I'll be replacing them with the AM26 Avons. Rear TT lasted 5000 miles, and I'm approaching 9000 miles since getting it back on the road.

The stability on the Dunlops is fine, except when traveling over drawbridges and ridges in the tarmac from truck blowouts. That center groove on the tire catches the grating on the bridges, and likes to follow those ridges on the tarmac. First time I crossed a drawbridge, I thought the front wheel was going to fall off!
I've since learned to cross at a certain speed range and let the handlebars shake.

Thanks for the link with a pic. I'm torn now as I kind of think the tread pattern on these is too new looking for my '75, but I don't like hearing the handling issues with the TT100's. Is it possible for someone to post a picture of their bike around '75 model year with these tires?
 
I used to ride withh TT100s on my Norton in the late 70's, & they are the best handling tyres I have ever used. We were nutcases then.
Every Avon tyre I have had on a bike, I have hated & took them off. Found others far better.
But, I now have a Roadrider on the front of mine, because I have been told they are good. Still have a BT45 on the back.
I am still making my mind up about the Avon on the front as I haven't had enough time on it yet (200 miles approx.), mainly 2 up.
Still reckon the Bridgestone seems a more predicticle tyre, handling wise.
I wonder, though, how anyone can get 5000 miles from a TT100, used to get about 2000 miles out of mine.
