There are two things with tyres -wear rate and grip. For racing, wear rate is less important than grip. However there is a thing which many riders do not appreciate - steering geometry affects the angle of lean, and the amount of oversteer when the motorcycle accelerates in corners. With more trail the motorcycle oversteers in corners and stays more vertical. In about 1962, two-strokes began beating Manx Nortons - the most noticeable thing was the difference in angle of lean. The presumption became more lean=more speed. But two strokes usually had a bump in the power delivery which made more lean dangerous. So neutral steering was preferred. The fastest way around a corner is less lean with more acceleration - more trail on the steering.
