Mk3 rear hub disk mount shape, round or pentagon, whats the history? One better than other?

I have one of each, came in box of parts in barn find, never seen the pentagon shape disk mount, only round. Anyone know the story on the pentagon shape disk mount surface?
 
I have one as well, I my opinion it was a copy of the Mk3 rear wheel (like a pattern part) Not as well made. I'll photo it when i get it down from the picture rail
