Has anyone tried Commando stainless fenders on an Atlas? I saw a pic of one somewhere and it just made the whole bike look lighter. I was wondering how the rear would fit. I'm sure it would need some massaging.
Picking up a late model Atlas tomorrow and although it is original and in good condition I might try the fender exchange for a fresher look.

look forward to seeing your modification pictures, should look "fresher" for sure.

Try the Mercury style fenders and you have something that looks good and fits properly.

There is a debate that the Mercury forks might be, and I stress might be 7 inch between centres, whereas the Atlas came with 7 3/8 inch which is also the Commando.
So do bear in mind the earlier domie forks are smaller

The Mercury was the last of the Featherbed/Dominator line so definitely had 7 3/8" wide forks.

Early Atlas (62, 63 plus?) is with 7" triple trees and later they went to 7-3/8". I would not be inclined to believe that the mercury, that is "very late", would have gone back to 7" for any logical reason to use obsolete front end components.

Not wishing to go too far off topic, but I have used Harley Sportster mudguards for my last couple of Commando projects, available on E-BAy for about 45 bucks. Get the ones suitable for 19" wheels. You have to trim the centre mount a bit and drill new mounting holes, but they look very good either in paint or chrome and the centre mounting is beefier than the standard Commando one which makes up for the lack of front and rear mounting struts.

They look remarkably similar to the CNW ones.

Ah, I forgot about the Mercury! They would look right if I could find them, but still might go for the later Commando fenders in stainless. Got the bike yesterday, and it is a nice, complete original late Atlas, titled 1969 but number indicates it was made in 67, probably sat on a dealer floor. Red tank now, will be silver, different fenders, alloy wheels, dual leading shoes front brake, flat bars. It has the points ignition and concentric carbs on it, so those will stay as is. No time to start on it now, probably a winter project. I have the brake, and some other Atlas wheels from my race bike. I'll use those and keep these nice original ones aside for posterity!
