Hi everybody.
Rebuilding the atlas and doing very nicely with the help of you guys.
However, I'm stuck.
Firstly, the clutch. It worked fine before the rebuild. I haven't touched the gearbox internals. When I assembled all the clutch plates and refitted a new cable, pulling the clutch lever only moves the plates a frag and you feel as though you'll break the cable. We have played around with the operating arm in the gearbox and it works ok. When I adjust up the adjusting screw on the outside of the clutch plates in takes up the slack at the handlebar lever quite freely. Lost on this one.
Secondly, how the hell do you fit the centre stand spring. I know where it goes etc , but the spring loops at the end have one correct angle to fit the centre stand, but the end of the spring has the loop at 90 degrees the wrong way. What's the trick to fitting this and twisting the spring at the same time?
The second part of the swing arm saga is when it's in the up position, it sits against the mufflers. How do I fit a rubber stopper and where abouts?
Cheers all.
Thanks hillbone

Clutch: Check the operating lever in the gearbox....if it is not properly engaged with the ball pivot, you will get the conditions you note.

Center stand: There is a wire link that connects the spring eye to the cross bar of the stand. If that is missing, you will be 90 degrees out of whack.

Swing arm: Do you mean the center stand? When it is up, mine contacts the left silencer (muffler). Seems like it has always been that way....occasionally clinks on a rough road. I suppose you could bond a rubber bumper on the frame cross tube to hold it off. My shop manual assembly diagram does not show any factory installed bumper....your choice to do so.

Hello again mate.
Sorry about the typo , I meant centre stand.
Firstly , we played around the the lever and the ball. Will try again.
On the spring I actually bought a new clip that attaches the spring to the centre stand off eBay. The spring still is out by 90 degrees. To stretch the spring I might try expanding it off the bike and pack the spring gaps with washes, leaving it in an extended position. Then when I fit it to the bike and put the bike on the centre stand and expand the spring further, the washes may fall out. Hopefully. Thought of that, late last night.
It still can't understand about the 90 degree. It looks like a factory spring and even the parts manual diagram shows the eyelets at the 90 degree variation.
Cheers and thanks.

Expanding the spring with washers sounds like a clever technique, it should work for you. Whenever I had the spring off my Atlas, it was a simple task to engage the upper spring eye onto the stud in the engine plate, using brake spring pliers.

I do not understand where your 90 degree offset is coming from....A pic would help.

My Atlas is on a cradle type lift right now and the center stand folded tween the frame and lift arms....I cannot see the spring to verify for you. My shop manual diagram shows both spring eyes in the same direction (aligned to accept a pin or bolt passing side to side, or parallel to the crankshaft). The upper eye hooks over a stud in the engine plates, and the clip passes thru the lower eye and hooks around the cross bar of the center stand.

I just saw a diagram in BritishOnly parts catalog which shows center stand spring eyes at 90 degree angle...top eye goes crossways in frame. Cannot tell from diagram where top eye is attached.

From this, and from my shop manual (which agrees with my Atlas), there were two types of spring in use....perhaps for 650's and early Atlas, then for later Atlas. Mine is a 63.

I hope this helps.
