Hello Everybody,
a nice article from Motorrad 1964 which will interest those of you in Vancouver or NW US. The pictures were taken at Deception Pass, Whidby Island, Washington. The author was a German émigré in Vancouver, who had owned his Atlas for 15 months, had read the model was about to be launched in Germany and had written to Motorrad to share his experiences. ( that is him with the T120 racer). His last bike had been a 1961 Manxman.
Overall the Atlas gets a pretty favourable report. Never had so much fun on a motorcycle.
Performance, especially acceleration, fantastic, hardly anything quicker on the roads.
Brakes lousy.
Vibration, tolerable under 6000 rpm. That said, he had rubber mounted his handlebar and had suffered numerous breakages/ failures which were repaired under warranty.
Changed the silencers to try to stop cracking.
Seat he replaced with a special made for him by Stanley & P.Simpson, Birmingham for £3.10s as original too slippery.
Recommends optional 19" rear wheel.
Finally, he complains a lot about heavy handed policing and bias against motorcyclists in Canada in the day and says he crawls to the border at weekends just to be able to get into top gear!
Have a good day,
Martin.
