ATF in Primary

Great stuff and when it leaks you can tell it from engine oil.

Thoughts on ATF in primary case??

I believe you own an 850 Mk.3, if so, then personally, I do not recommend you use ATF in the primary.

The problem with having a separate Mk 3 forum is there is really very little to discuss, maintenance is minimal and repairs are seldom needed. There is no reason to modify because they are already perfect.
We could talk about all the great rides I guess.
Nah, better to stay here with the great unwashed, much more going on.

Isn't everyone without a Vincent is a heathen?

I use a mix of ATF and motor oil, primarily so I can tell where a potential leak comes from. I ran straight ATF for a few years, but ran low of ATF on the shelf one time, so mixed in oil. Been happy with the result.

I thought everybody did that. Auto injection when your crank seal leaks. :D

 hahaha true!

As for the Mk3 thing........
I started my bike up a few days ago....... and There arose such a clatter, I got down on my knees to see what was the matter. 8)
It seems that the hydraulic primary chain tensioner had lost its prime and was not doing it's job. the primary chain rattling around was the cause of the noise.

I pumped it back up and all is good once again.
I can only assume if 50 wt. will leak down, the thinner ATF will only allow it to happen faster.

I always ran ATF in my MK3 before I went to a belt. It would rattle a bit if it had been setting a few weeks. Never saw much difference. Jim

I bought my beltdrive directly from Tony Hayward. He recommended using ATF because it would help keep things cool and clean without venting, (MkII). It seems polyurethane doesn't mind the stuff but I found you can skip it and run it sealed without any problems. Tony is a great guy to talk to. This was when longdistance was steep, but it was worth every penny, (dollar) :D

I used to use dexron, mainly because I had a 50 gallon drum setting in my shop. Type F has friction modifiers that will make an automatic transmission shift firmer. I tried it also when I was still using bronze clutch plates thinking maybe they wouldn't slip as much but I couldn't tell the difference. Jim
