As I wait to assemble the head, Im wondering about the assembly grease I picked up today. They guy at the store said that it should be good for assembling the engine. I was planning on getting an assembly oil though. In a sense the grease may be better just because the oil might drain out before the first start up seeing that it is probably a few months away. However the grease will remain in it's intended place and wear at start up shouldn't be a concern with grease?? Does this sound like I'm on the right track.

Hi Matt,
Drive to your local Honda shop and pick up a tube of Moly Paste (molybdenum disulfide grease). The stuff is great for cam lobes and various bushings etc..

I have used Redline Assembly Lube on several restorations and it seems very good. My usual drill is to start up the bike and then drain the oil immediately after a few minutes of running. The oil will be red from the assembly lube. Then I replace the oil and run for another few hundred miles and replace again.

For what it's worth, I have not rebuilt a motorcycle engine, but have done several automobiles. I like a mixture of 50 weight Valvoline Racing Oil and STP oil treatment. It's sticky like honey, stays in place, and lubes pretty well. +1 on running it briefly then draining the oil, then running it in and changing oil again. Good luck!
