Are the parts people just getting older and grumpier?

Dave, I'm looking forward to receiving and fitting this part both to the Commando and the Dommie.
I've just installed a Newby belt drive on the Dommie, went on perfectly, worked perfectly for about twenty miles then started to drag just a tiny bit. Pulled the cover off and there are telltale grease lines on the pressure plate emanating from the clutch centre.
It is sticky smelly old gear oil coming past the clutch rod, messing up my great new clutch! Right now it is just enough to make gear selection from neutral clunky, however in time as the plates get more contaminated I know that they will also start to slip and probably drag more too.

Having lived with slipping and sticky clutches, tho it is certainly their own choice, I don't understand why any Norton parts dealer would not stock a tiny part that can make a major part of your bike function better for twenty bucks? OK forty for the Dommie.
Another way to look at it is the $700 Newby clutch is next to useless without the $40 seal.

Reminds me of some work I did on the bike roadside last summer. Think it might even have been clutch related

I know, I know, this thread is way past its time, but just a side note on service: I ordered some stuff from old britts on thursday, and they came today, saturday. That's from top left coast to bottom right coast. I'd say that's pretty damn good. With service like that, Ella is more than entitled to have a grumpy day every so often.

Nar! Milk it until it's dry!

In before the lock.

Complaints about Fred and Ella? A couple of the best folks in the Norton parts community? My guess is the OP's problem watches him shave in the mornings.

I'd better pipe in here to set the record strait. Glen - I remember our conversation last week. I did not say as you QUOTED me saying, "I don't know why you are calling us when we don't have the part." You may have felt I implied saying that because of the irritation in my voice. The irritation was not because you asked about a part, but because you were not happy with my answer, and I wasn't in the mood to carry on with the discussion about why we don't stock this part even though other dealers do - and especially after you made it clear that you would be taking your long list of parts elsewhere so you wouldn't have to pay for shipping from two suppliers. I am sorry for letting my irritation show, but I just didn't know what else I could have said to make you happy. I left the conversation thinking it was mild irritation on both ends of the phone - certainly not enough to post a rant on this forum about me and Old Britts. Grumpy Ella.

Ella,
I have a long list of parts I still need, and will be shopping with you despite the fact that you don't carry the parts I want from Mick Hemmings, Steve Maney, CNW, Comstock Enginerring or Vintage Brakes. Just to name a few. In fact I got my clutch seals directly from Dyno Dave. I think most of use are OK with it. I do wish when I placed my last order that you would have told me that I had forgotten to get a new clutch circlip. I think you should have seen that coming and dropped one in the package. Now, I have to make up a whole new parts list just to get that one tiny part!

But thanks for good service anyway.

Russ

I'm getting older and grumpier the longer this thread goes on.

Agreed. I think the US boys are forming a posse and there's gonna be a lynchin... I might hole up in the Kettle Valley for the winter, maybe rob some trains to get by..morphing into Billy Miner here.

LAB, please put this thread to death when you have time.

Hopefully, everyone has had their say, so I will lock it for now.
