April Commando attack: Krazy Horse

I just treated myself to a waterproof textile jacket and trouser combo, not quite the thing I planned to be seen in on a cafe racer but at least it means I can now rule out 'weather permitting'.... I will be there!

What did you get? And how is it with the cafe racer riding position?

It’s not always easy getting good gear for this kinda riding position as most vendors seem to assume we wanna dress up as power rangers!

It's nothing special as I don't plan on wearing it more than once (trip for 1st service, set off from home at 4degC then two hours dodging the storms lol). It's a cheap as chips waterproof/thermal lined setup from ARMR Moto (SportsBikeShop special, buy the jacket and get trousers free). With the cafe racer position in mind I went for a Jacket that zips to trousers at back (to stop jacket riding up), longer sleeves (to prevents the sleeves pulling out of my gloves as I s-t-r-e-t-c-h over the tank!) and a thin elasticated collar which doesn't interfere with the back of my helmet.

I am hoping the 14th will be dry and warm when I can turn out in something a little more stylish and in keeping with the Norton :) but if needs must I can turn up warm and dry even if I do look like the Michelin man.

For us boutique cafe racers you just can't beat Lewis Leathers, Goldtop, Belstaff, Barbour International. And for that up-to-date high tech protection Knox (under-jacket armour and jeans).

Hey BritTwit, we get 80% sunshine and don't have to worry too much about water resistant clothing. These hard core brothers get 80% precipitation and still go out. Maybe we should stop bitching about the snow.

Hmmm, last time I tried on a Lewis leather it felt stiff just standing still. When I tried to emulated my riding position, I gave up. Which I was kinda pleased about when I saw the price!
I’ve got a comfy old Barber, which has zero safety features and ain’t even water proof!
I tried on some ridiculously expensive Rukka gearbat the NEC but that’s obviously designed for ‘serious’ riders who have ‘sensible’ riding positions!
My racing leathers are lovely, if lacking in weather protection, but I feel a right plonker wearing them on the road!
It might have to be a donkey jacket and wellies like when I were a lad !!

I have a 'Held' perforated leather jacket which was expensive but fits like a glove and perfect for the heads-down position in the height of the Summer. I have been using an Oxford 'Hardy' wax jacket whilst running the 961 in during the cold and damp. It's a bit like the Belstaff Brooklands but a fraction of the price and will be my no1 go to jacket for the Norton. Both jackets are fitted throughout with D3O armour which is lightweight, supple and you don't know it's in place.

We have a new Mk2 Sport owner, Chris, says he will join us at KH, and another Mark lives in Bury also hoping to join us (both from Facebook 961 group).

Not quite 80% precipitation.... on 50/50 days like this I think of Clint Eastwood asking the punk if he feels lucky lol.

I have the union garage NY Robinson Jacket. Waxed canvas with reinforced joints, full d30 armour back shoulder and elbows. all the protection for as fast as the 961 will go. And cafe ready because it has a skinny collar so the back of your helmet is clear when riding clip ons. http://uniongaragenyc.com/

Game for a laugh ? Well I’m not easily offended so u lot go ahead at my expense , Not coolest looking kit on the block, but I got this at the NEC bike show in November ,the Hellite air bag vest ,the guy did a demo on me then proceeded to whack me with a club hammer ,not hard enough I hear some of u say, the vest is attached to bike via snapable lanyard, needs around 70lbs of force to set it off in a nano second.
If u ever had ur blood pressure taken ? Then that is the sensation u get liken to a huge bear hug all over ur upper body. I will be sporting this at the Krazy Horse catch up extravaganza & looks like I’ll be looking considerably less cool than u lot ,it’s a step up from when I ride my scooter in sandals ,shorts & a T shirt

The Halvarssons range of leather jackets and textiles are pretty good. They do a good ''zipper belt" which will zip any Halverssons jacket to a pair of Kevlar jeans.

Yes Ben, their gear looks good. I like the look of the Wolf jacket. Expensive, but I don’t mind paying for good kit, so long as it’s good!

Gotta try one on though, I’ve seen jackets on t’internet before and thought ‘that’s the one’ only to be shown otherwise when I actually try one on.

They have a nice selection of gear. In the UK there are still the remnants of the old original rockers left who stay true to the black leathers. The rockers and mods took advantage of the large amount of cheap government surplus clothing available after WWII so the flying jackets, scarves, goggles, Navy parkas, boots with Naval woollen socks eventually became their uniforms, with new manufacturers replicating these styles. We now have younger fashion conscious riders picking up the style from outlets like Urban Rider in London.

MxMartin,

How’d it go?

Did you get wet?

Any drama with the service?

Wotsit like with the open pipes and re map compared to previous (I’ve never ridden a stock quite one)?

Did you order a V4 while you were waiting??

Hopefully you’ve thawed out enough by now to be able to type...

Just got home, it's been an experience, not all good! Didn't go yesterday as the rain was a little on the heavy side here, Olivia changed it to today at short notice (thank you). Open pipes sound superb, 600+ miles on the clock so even managed a brief spell around the 5k+ rpm. No probs with map but having just got used to the old map below 2k I now have to start again (snatchy), pops and crackles as you close the throttle from speed. Got to see the V4's being built, even heard one fire up briefly :). A word of caution, for anyone accustomed to the first service being 'complimentary' (cars, bikes, whatever) with just the cost of consumables to pay for, you are in for a shock - and it isn't cheap!

Had a bite to eat in the Donington circuit paddock... track day for classic cars, oooooh the noise was just wonderful!
