my fiberglass tank is leaking around one fitting and i found a threaded insert had been glued into the tank, not threaded into it. removal of the insert left a sizeable crater. thought i might reinstall the insert . someone said i should just seal the hole completely and run off one petcock. this is a learner bike for me and i intend to sell it in a year or so. i've got a mark iia in pieces in the basement that'll be my regular bike. any thoughts on the one petcock idea? i won't be riding more than 50 miles at a time, ever. so running out of gas isn't an issue. i keep 15 gallons of av gas 100 in jerry cans for fueling. thanx, rick

You could run with only one petcock, there will still be a little bit of fuel in the other side of the tank when it runs dry, you will have to tip the bike to it's side to get it over the hump but it may make the difference between riding to a gas station rather than pushing it there.

What will you tell the next owner? Who wants a bike with a buggered tank? Is it that much more work to reinstall the fitting than to patch the hole?

I hate fiberglass gas tanks.

i reckon i'd tell a prospective buyer the truth. i could reinstall the fitting but that area,6sq"'s, has been patched. i could relocate it to an unmolested area or i could run off one petcock. thinking being it's better to run off one sound one than than a sound one and asuspect one. i guess i'd y the good one over to the carbs. there's a british outfit selling alloy tanks already painted. they get 750 u.s. for an interstate, painted 750 or 850 style w/ locking cap.i'll go that route for the markiia. i'm just really hot to get him running, the 750 that is. thanks, rick

I have a Mk2A and I only run with one petcock. I use the other one as an additional reserve.
I have not gone over the ton on one petcock but I have run at 80 plus for sustained periods.
I am just giving you that information to use as you wish....

The Atlas only had one petcock didn't it? My bike was a Dominator I think and it only has one, the stockers have a reserve petcok that picks up higher.

I'm putting a Harley type petcock on my build, the valve has three positions, off normal and reserve. It uses a bigger hole (3/8" NPT) than the stock ones and is also NPT threads so I don't have to buy a tap as well to install it, since I already had one in my tool collection.

thanks boys
i just took it to a body shop and for 50 they'll clean it, reinstall the fitting w/ the proper patch. they guarantee it won't leak. it'll be easier to sell w/ the 2 valves. get it back friday and away we go hopefully. hate pessimism but it seems at every turn w/ this bike a gremlin appears, mostly screwed up wiring. so tonight i'll quash some barley pops and peruse duckworth's book for the 50th and try to think positive.
