It's a crank seal conversion on a pre unit triumph timing cover
I'd like to know what seal it is so I can replace it
It's metal housing with a seal inside
No circlip to retain it

Measure the I/D of the casting and the O/D of the shaft portion plus seal thickness and you'll get what you need.
Pretty sure if you get a more modern seal type ( TC rather than TB ) you'll get a rubber seal with twin lip instead of metal clad with single lip.

What are they used on? Where can I get one if needed?
I've seen plenty of oil seal conversions on pre unit triumphs but never this type
And they are usually retained with a circlip

I’ve got the usual black seal held by a circlip conversion on my own T110. Maybe the metal case on your seal is tight enough unclipped, but who knows…

I some people will only use Pioneer Weston brand seals in that application. Supposed to be less prone to invert under pressure.

Baz, I was just cutting up… Go to your local bearing supply specialist, and have ready the outside diameter, the inside diameter, as well as the width of the seal. That type of neoprene seal (TB) vulcanized onto metal should be easily searchable.

Is it not simply a stock unit construction type seal?
No definitely not
I've seen loads of conversions but not this type
I took the timing cover off to see what the condition was inside
The timing gears look exceptional with zero play!
There was slight backlash on the AAR unit
It has a morgo pump fitted
The quill on the crank looked good

I had a feeling it might be a common conversion

Looks very clean in there mate, no excessive blow-by on those piston rings 👍
It fired it up on the second kick
It sounds rattly from the primary to me
But there was no smoke from engine but it lost its spark after a couple of minutes
It's got a thorspark unit fitted in the end of the mag so I'll have to investigate that first

The thorspark is dead !
I've fitted a magneto to it now and it's running again
The clatter turned out to be the Alton dynamo/alternator it's backlash was making a clatter with the exhaust cam wheel
