Dave, after re-reading your posts I don't see how I got the impression that you skipped the oiltank. Sometimes people swap the crank vent intake with the tank vent on the oiltank. The one at the top of the little dome is for the tank vent to aircleaner hose. the one on the filler is for the crankcase hose.
As far as going through a lot of points seals without success, you're using the points seal tool 06-1359?

Hi, Bob

Yes, I am using the points seal tool. I was going to put that in my post but figured I'd wait for someone to ask

Hi,

I replaced my timing cover oil seal recently & used the seal tool,

I noticed that when the tool was nipped up it was not aligning perfectly with the shaft. I used a small amount of electrical tape to ensure the transition between shaft & tool was smooth. I also put lots of oil on the tape.

So far the oil seal seems to be holding up OK.

Picked up this tip on this forum.

Just curious, is your idler spindle loose. Is so, it is hard to adjust the cam chain correctly.

When you think you got it, the bad bore for the spindle allows for discrepancy. When the timing cover is then applied, the spindle and the cam get push apart. Two bad things happen. 1. the cam chain become way too tight and 2. the cam gets pull toward the rear leaving a gap in the seal point toward the front.

Do a search for sacrificial timing cover.

Notice the angle.

Dont remember seeing any loose parts last time I was in there (2 winters ago)....Maybe I'll have a look this winter again, Planning on doing a re-wire, all white wires just to make it interesting  . I will do the electrical tape thing that sounds good.

Rotella 15-40 diesel is a great oil and additive package for our old bikes. Its common practice for years by knowing Brit Iron riders.
I put my PCV up near top of tank about 6 inches away from tank and its worked its treat to stiffle oil weep and no mayonnaise oil. I did a lot of 20-30' F riding as long as no ice and not much snow, and in rain storms, still no mayonnaise. I did see some mayonnaise on first start up with new oil that sat in engine few days so must of been natural condensation as not combustion yet. Freaked me out too and thought some big gloob of sealant or dissolved JBWeld being mixed up, Nope after letting it sit over night and finally a test run for 15 miles it was back to normal oil appearance.

I've a cut up TS cover to nip the cam up if ya need to borrow it I'm done with it till next engine blow up. That spindle shaft is only sitting in like 1/4 thick Al ugh.
